Role Overview Ultra Maritime is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Senior Project Engineer to guide the development of advanced Anti‑Submarine Warfare (ASW) systems for the naval market. This is a strategic leadership role within major defense programs, offering the opportunity to lead large, interdisciplinary engineering teams and deliver complex, mission‑critical systems.
Nationality Requirements Candidates must be eligible to obtain the relevant security clearance required for the role, due to the nature of the programmes we deliver for our customers.
Job Description As the Senior Project Engineer, you will be the technical owner of assigned projects, responsible for delivering engineering commitments to the customer. You will lead technical planning, execution, and risk management, while mentoring engineers and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful outcomes.
Key Responsibilities Own and manage engineering work packages / control accounts across the full project lifecycle
Lead technical discussions with customers and internal teams
Oversee all project engineering work packages, leading the team and work package owners to ensure timely delivery and quality of engineering outputs
Accountable for engineering team performance in meeting schedules and achieving key milestones within the defined scope
Works closely with Program Manager, System Design Authority, and Subsystem Leads to resolve technical, program, and resource issues
Drive resolution of technical challenges through root cause analysis and corrective actions
Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and design standards
Define and manage integration, verification, and validation strategies
Build and maintain engineering staffing plans to ensure appropriate skills and capacity
Oversee a team of up to 50+ engineering resources
Develop and maintain engineering plans, schedules, and procedures
Monitor performance and take proactive action to resolve issues
Manage technical documentation including compliance matrices and requirement definitions
Act as the primary engineering liaison between technical teams, program management, operations, and supply chain
Provide timely and accurate reporting to leadership and customers
Lead internal and external design reviews and support programmatic reviews
Contribute to internal R&D and process improvement initiatives
Implement lessons learned and best practices across the engineering team
Skills, Qualifications & Experience Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science, Acoustic Engineering, or related field
10+ years of engineering experience, with 5+ years in technical leadership roles
Proven experience leading large interdisciplinary teams and delivering complex systems
Strong understanding of systems engineering and sonar technologies
Experience across the full project lifecycle in the defence industry
Familiarity with Earned Value Management (EVMS), Control Account Management (CAM), and Microsoft Project desired
Ability to make informed decisions on scope, schedule, cost management, quality, and efficiency
Skilled in motivating teams, managing stakeholders, and influencing outcomes without relying on authority
Professional Engineer (PEng) preferred
Capable of acquiring a NATO security clearance and a Canadian Controlled Goods assessment
Personal Attributes Excellent communicator with the ability to present complex technical information clearly
Proactive, collaborative team player with strong leadership and mentoring skills
Highly organized with strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities
Stable under pressure and able to manage multiple priorities effectively
Demonstrates initiative and drives results through influence and strategic thinking
Travel This role is primarily based at Ultra Maritime’s Dartmouth site, with occasional travel within Canada/USA and Europe.
