We are currently hiring a Mine Engineering Technician (Ground Control) to join the Engineering team at our underground salt mine in Goderich, Ontario. This is not a fly in/fly out position. The candidate must relocate to the Goderich area.
Compass Minerals’ Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St.
Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products.
Goderichis named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.
How will you contribute to the team?
This non-exempt position functions within a team of other professionals, and reports directly to the Ground Control Engineer within the Engineering Department. This position will assist the Engineering Department in ground control and rock mechanics activities while providing assistance to the planning group with scheduling and drafting.
- Installation and maintenance of rock mechanics instrumentation in underground excavations as required.
- Daily, weekly, monthly gathering of data from underground rock mechanics instruments, as well as formatting and analysis of these data as required.
- Inspection of conditions of underground excavations and drafting of rehab plans as required by the Ground Control Engineer.
- Complete geologic mapping of underground openings as required.
- Execute 3D scanning of surface and underground areas as required for volume and detailed measurements including processing and registration of products.
- Collection of GPR (ground penetrating radar) surveys as required, presentation and analysis of these data.
- Assist in weekly mine-wide ventilation surveys, diagnose issues, develop and communicate corrective actions as required.
- Complete Monthly Audits of underground openings for ground conditions and any changes in roof and wall conditions and ground support integrity.
- Filing and maintenance of engineering drawings and documents.
- Make arrangements with mine operations personnel for equipment requirements, and physical installation of the instrumentation.
- Keep aware of industry best practices and new technologies to improve overall safety and efficiency of the operation.
- Assist Engineering department as required.
- Perform other related duties as required.
What should you bring to the role?
- Qualified Mine Engineering Technologist or Technician.
- 3-5 years’ experience preferred in mining.
- Experience with underground soft rock mining is considered an asset
- Complete proficiency with Microsoft Office programs is required.
- AutoCAD highly desirable.
- Strong analytical skills
