Job DescriptionAs a Material Technician, you are an essential member responsible for ensuring the quality, safety, and integrity of construction materials used on projects. Your work involves testing, analyzing data, and providing technical expertise to support the selection, handling, and application of materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and other construction-related materials.
- Conduct field testing including compaction, hot mix asphalt sampling, asphalt coring, and occasional wet concrete sampling.
- Perform quality assurance or quality control tests in field laboratories for grading, base, or paving projects.
- Use nuclear gauges to confirm density and moisture of granular base.
- Determine asphalt density, asphalt content, and gradation.
- Maintain accurate daily journals of construction activities and testing programs.
- Report testing results using standardized forms and reports.
- Work flexible schedules and travel within Alberta for extended periods.
- Maintain a safe working environment by complying with all safety codes and regulations and participating in assigned Health and Safety training programs.
- Assist the Laboratory Supervisor in maintaining laboratories and equipment in proper working condition.
- Post‑secondary education in Construction Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology.
- Experience with Alberta Transportation construction specifications and testing and reporting requirements is an asset.
- Experience with soil analysis, soil compaction, and field testing.
- Experience testing hot mix asphalt.
- CCIL certifications for Aggregate, Concrete, and Asphalt testing are an asset.
- Willingness to learn.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications for project reporting.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license and a 3‑year driver’s abstract.
