HSSE Coordinator

The Opportunity

The HSSE Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and leading all Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) programs at the plant to ensure compliance with company policies, as well as state and federal regulations. This role oversees the administration, continuous improvement, and maintenance of the Health and Safety Management System, Security protocols, and Environmental Compliance measures.

As a partner with plant leadership, the HSSE Coordinator provides coaching, training, and guidance to ensure consistent application of HSSE programs across all functions and drives initiatives focused on employee wellness, environmental stewardship, and a strong safety culture.

• Develop and maintain appropriate Health & Safety policies and procedures in compliance with corporate guidelines, directives and legislative regulations.
• Promote health and safety awareness, encouraging and supporting resolution of safety suggestions and hazards.
• Lead the Joint Health & Safety committee, coordinating monthly meetings, workplace inspections, distributing minutes and following up on issues.
• Provide specialist advice to and support the operations team on all relevant plant safety issues such as lockout, confined space, job safety analysis, machine guarding, and slips, trips and falls.
• Support and participate in all internal safety audits.
• Investigate all reported incidents, accidents and injuries and ensure adequate follow‑up.
• Manage the Return to Work program for injured employees to facilitate a safe and timely return to work.
• Liaise with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board on ongoing WSIB claims.
• Coordinate the WHMIS program, including management of MSDS data and employee training.
• Develop and maintain an effective Ergonomics program to reduce strain injuries and detect early signs of problems.
• Coordinate safety training initiatives for all employees, including management, supervisory and plant personnel.
• Coordinate the safety orientation program for all new employees.
• Ensure appropriate Personal Protective Equipment is used and provided.
• Coordinate the Emergency Response Team and train staff for crisis response and plant evacuation.
• Liaise with regulatory bodies, auditors and external contractors during inspections or safety audits.
• Promote continuous improvement through safety campaigns, audits and employee engagement.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the plant’s overall HSSE objectives.

• Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
• Minimum 3 – 5 years of experience in an Occupational Health and Safety role in a manufacturing or process industry.
• Possession or active pursuit of Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) or National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) certification.
• Certification in First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, and Confined Space Entry (or willingness to obtain).
• Strong PC skills and ability to use Microsoft Office and other applicable programs.
• Ability to work both individually and as part of a team.
• Strong report writing, communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to coach and influence cross‑functional teams.
• Comprehensive knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety and WSIB legislation.
• Proven ability to train, coach and influence employees at all levels.
• Excellent analytical, problem‑solving and communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, projects and deadlines.
