Recognized as a top employer in their region, they are known for a collaborative culture built on the values of care, trust, courage, and sustainability.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the VP, the Senior Treaty Underwriter is responsible for underwriting complex reinsurance treaty arrangements, managing key broker and client relationships, and contributing to overall portfolio performance. The role focuses on assessing treaty and portfolio-level risk, structuring reinsurance solutions, and exercising underwriting authority in support of profitable, strategic growth.

This is a highly autonomous role where you will evaluate large and complex treaty submissions, determine appropriate coverage structures and pricing, and make independent decisions to accept, modify, or decline risks, drawing on comprehensive underwriting, actuarial, and market analysis.

The book of business is primarily US-focused (approximately 90%), with quarterly travel to the US for broker and client visits.

Key Responsibilities
  • Independently underwrite complex new and renewal treaty business, including nonstandard structures and multiline portfolios, recommending pricing, capacity, and terms aligned with underwriting standards.
  • Build and maintain strong broker relationships to support profitable growth and a sustainable pipeline of target business.
  • Analyze and negotiate treaty wordings to identify and mitigate coverage, aggregation, and exposure risks.
  • Partner closely with the Pricing & Modelling team to align underwriting judgment with technical pricing, catastrophe, and accumulation analysis.
  • Act as a technical authority, providing expert guidance on complex underwriting decisions, contract interpretation, and portfolio implications.
  • Monitor and analyze portfolio performance, identifying trends, emerging risks, and profitability drivers, and recommending strategic actions.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of underwriting experience in the reinsurance industry, with a strong focus on property and casualty treaty business.
  • Solid understanding of the full treaty underwriting process — receiving and analyzing submissions, pricing, negotiating terms with brokers, and meeting with cedants.
  • Strong property treaty underwriting background (casualty/liability experience is a plus but not required).
  • Ability to exercise independent underwriting authority and elevate complex matters with clear analysis and well-supported recommendations.
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced insurance credentials (CIP, FCIP) and/or a relevant advanced degree preferred.

Base salary: $115,000 – $140,000 (flexibility available for the right candidate based on experience and market data).

  • Short-term incentive (bonus), tied to individual and organizational performance goals
  • Comprehensive employer-paid health and dental benefits
  • Annual healthcare spending account.

This role offers a genuine work-life balance within a reinsurer environment. Staff have noted a strong culture, collaborative teams, and a long-term career focus. The defined benefit pension plan and wellness offerings are among the best in the industry.
