Position Summary
The Controls Technical Support Specialist provides high-quality technical support to internal and external customers for Sporlan electronic control products used in industrial refrigeration, supermarket refrigeration, and air-conditioning applications. This role manages technical inquiries through phone, email, and other support channels, including participation in a rotating daytime and overnight overtime schedule for emergency support calls. The position requires strong technical knowledge, clear communication, independent problem-solving, and regular coordination with team leaders, stakeholders, and cross‑functional departments.
Scope, Supervision, and Interaction
This position has no direct reports.
Serves as a technical advisor to internal teams and customers.
Provides support primarily for MT Alliance products and S3C Case Controls.
May support additional Sporlan electronic products as business needs require.
Collaborate regularly with Research and Development, Technical Support, Integration, Customer Service, and Sales teams.
Responsibilities
Provide remote and on-site diagnostics for electronic controls and HVAC/R system processes.
Deliver technical guidance on refrigeration control sequences for CO₂, ammonia, chemical, and glycol systems.
Recommend process control improvements, including PID tuning and system stabilization.
Train and mentor technical support team members in the United States and Canada.
Perform remote programming and off‑site pre‑programming of HVAC/R, lighting, energy management, and related subsystems.
Interpret, troubleshoot, modify, and program custom block diagrams.
Support integration across building automation and industrial communication protocols.
Act as a communication link between Research and Development, Technical Support, and the Integration Team.
Install firmware using web‑based applications.
Provide pre‑sales technical support, including component sizing and selection; CAD model and drawing support; part number selection; competitor cross‑reference assistance.
Provide post‑sales technical support, including installation and start‑up assistance; diagnostic troubleshooting; field issue resolution.
Support Customer Service and Sales teams with product identification; service and repair component selection; part number creation; product sizing and selection.
Maintain technical literature, support documentation, and related materials.
Provide input on product requirements, specifications, and improvement opportunities.
Analyze customer issues and identify VA/VE opportunities to support product enhancements.
Prepare timely reports summarizing findings related to assigned products, applications, or projects.
Develop and maintain knowledge of competitive products and marketplace activity.
Participate in the development and implementation of customer response strategies.
Support customer communication programs and special marketing initiatives.
Track daily, weekly, and monthly activities to identify trends and drive process improvements.
Maintain high standards for customer service, responsiveness, throughput, and quality.
Participate in division lean initiatives and high‑performance team activities.
Qualifications
Minimum 2‑year college degree or Quebec DEC/DCS in electrical engineering, computer systems, mechanical engineering, building mechanics, refrigeration, or a related technical field required.
A 4‑year bachelor’s degree in industrial automation will be considered.
Refrigeration trade degree with extensive PLC programming experience preferred.
Minimum 7 years of technical experience required.
Experience in industrial controls, software programming, or refrigeration required; a combination of these areas is highly preferred.
Strong PC literacy, including experience with MS Office, AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, MS Teams, and Zoom.
Excellent comprehension skills, with the ability to understand, describe, and discuss technical problems clearly and effectively.
