Throughout their career, Constables will have opportunities to serve in more than one SPS Bureau. SPS is currently hiring Constables tojoin the Community Policing Bureau. Within the Community Policing Bureau, the Cells Constable will be assigned to serve a specified term with the Detention Services Section, Cell Management Unit (see Conditions of Employment below).

Constables in the Community Policing Bureau fill a criticalfront-line role, enabling public safety at the community level. These Constables work in daily partnership with local communities, stakeholders, SPSteam members, and other policing agencies (including Integrated Teams) topromote public safety, community engagement, and community well being tosupport the quality of life for citizens.

This role carries legal powers to enable the maintenance oflaw and order and carries responsibility for making decisions in accordance with theBC Police Act, exercising professional discretion, as appropriate to the role, in line with legal frameworks, and SPS policingguidelines.

Constables are required to meet and maintain the highest professional standards required of their role, by conducting all actions in alegal, ethical, and justifiable manner to uphold the law and achieve the best outcomes in a wide range of situations/incidents.

Regular Full-Time

Provide initial and ongoing frontline response to a widerange of incidents that may include complex and confrontational situations,assessing immediate risk, threat, and harm to determine a proportionateresponse in line with the law, policy, and guidance.

Take a lead role in establishing effective localizedpartnerships to problem solve, engage with, reassure, and support organizations, groups, and individuals in line with the SPS’s values, mission,and vision.

Effectively engage with victims, witnesses, suspects, andthe vulnerable to provide initial support, direction towards relevant services,establish relationships, and gather information that supports greater public safety in accordance with equality, diversity, and human rights considerations.

Maintain awareness of potential and actual risks to individuals, taking appropriate action to protect and support those in need ofpublic protection.
