General Description

The Lead Machinist/Programmer is responsible for programming, setting up, operating, and optimizing CNC machining processes while providing technical leadership to the machining team. This role serves as the primary resource for CNC programming, process improvement, troubleshooting and quality assurance. The incumbent will support production efficiency, mentor team members and contribute to the company’s strategic growth through continuous improvement, capability expansion and customer-focused solutions.

  • Advanced knowledge of CNC machining, tooling, fixturing, and manufacturing processes
  • Proficiency with CAD/CAM programming software and CNC controls
  • Strong blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation skills
  • Extensive experience with machine setup, process optimization, and problem-solving
  • Ability to inspect complex components using precision measuring instruments
  • Leadership skills with experience training and mentoring machinists and operators
  • Strong communication and organizational abilities
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Working knowledge of machine maintenance requirements and preventative maintenance practices
  • Commitment to workplace safety, quality standards, and 5S principles
Experience

7+ years of experience with advanced programming and setup experience

Education/Certifications

Machinist Certification, Red Seal (preferred) or equivalent combination of education and experience

Responsibilities

Programming & Optimization
- Write, edit, and optimize CNC programs using advanced CAD/CAM software. Develop efficient machining strategies to maximize productivity and reduce cycle times. Troubleshoot and resolve programming, tooling, and machining issues. Support process improvement initiatives to improve quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

Set-Up & Machining
- Set up CNC machines, tooling, and fixtures for production. Run and prove out new programs, making adjustments as required. Verify dimensional accuracy and ensure geometric tolerances are achieved. Support production needs by operating machines when required

Leadership & Training
- Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to machinists and operators. Assign daily priorities and assist with workflow coordination. Train employees on machine setups, programming concepts, quality requirements, and best practices. Serve as a technical advisor for complex machining challenges. Support leadership succession by transferring knowledge and developing team capabilities

Business Growth & Strategic Support
- Strengthen relationships with existing customers through technical support and solutions. Support quoting and project planning activities by providing machining expertise. Identify opportunities to expand machining capabilities, equipment utilization, and service offerings. Participate in evaluating new technologies, equipment, and manufacturing processes. Support strategic initiatives, special projects, and continuous business growth opportunities

Quality Assurance
- Inspect finished components using precision measuring equipment, including micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other inspection tools. Ensure products meet blueprint specifications, customer requirements, and internal quality standards. Investigate quality concerns and implement corrective actions as required. Maintain accurate records related to inspections and process validation

Maintenance & Safety
- Ensure machines are properly calibrated and maintained. Participate in preventative maintenance activities and troubleshooting equipment issues. Promote and enforce all company safety policies and procedures. Maintain organized work areas consistent with 5S and lean manufacturing standards. Identify and report potential safety hazards and process improvements

Working Conditions
  • Manufacturing environment with exposure to CNC machinery, tooling, noise, and lubricants
  • Standing, bending, and lifting required throughout the shift
  • Occasional overtime may be required to support production schedules and customer demands
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required
