Position: 05R5-25-2 Kanikonriio Advisor Youth Life Promotion
Location: West Haldimand (Port Dover)

Description
The Kanikonriio Advisor reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Manager of the Kanikonriio (Good Mind) Child & Youth Programs, Six Nations of the Grand River Social Services, and the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council.

The Advisor provides a range of direct and indirect services to children and youth ages 0‑18 experiencing mental health and addiction related difficulties. Services include assessing and developing individual care plans, delivering pro‑social groups, creating programming that supports mental wellbeing and reduces the risk of suicide, providing coverage and response to crisis situations, and referring children, youth, and families to relevant programs and services.

The Advisor will be familiar with elementary and secondary schools on and off reserve, support in‑school programming, and develop all programs with culture, language, and a connection to the land to holistically support the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness of children and youth.

Key

Duties & Responsibilities

Plan and develop programming connected to the land, Ogwehoweh culture, and languages.

Create group programs that foster healthy relationships, positive mental health, self‑esteem, and cultural heritage connections.

Network with service partners and the community to collect feedback and determine needs for program development.

Provide immediate support, rapid stabilization, and relief of symptoms for children, youth, and families in crisis situations.

Provide follow‑up support and referrals to appropriate services.

Assist with the development of safety/crisis plans and educate on suicide risk reduction.

Provide debriefing and ongoing supports after crises for individuals, groups, or wider community.

Follow procedures for child protection, threat risk analysis, and suicide protocols.

Maintain records, collect and organize statistics and data in accordance with funding criteria.

Report on quantitative and qualitative data from programs and services delivered.

Follow case management, informed consent, confidentiality, and record‑keeping practices.

Participate in unit staff meetings, supervision, planning, and program evaluation.

Participate in the development and modification of service plans.

Develop a network of community partners and resources to support referrals and program delivery.

Collaborate with school staff to develop and tailor relevant programs and services.

Liaise with internal and external service providers as appropriate.

Work with families and school staff to provide indirect mental health and wellness supports.

Participate in case conferences with families, school staff, and service providers to maintain open communication.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum of a college diploma in Social Service Worker, Child and Youth Worker, or Recreation and Leisure Services with 1 year of demonstrated experience working with children and youth in a community setting.

Post‑secondary diploma or degree in a related field with 3 years of experience developing programming for children and youth related to recreation, mental health, or supportive care; certified in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) or Mental Health First Aid; valid current G class license, favourable driver abstract, and reliable vehicle with minimum $2 million liability insurance; favourable vulnerable record check; additional training or certifications in mental health, addictions, counselling, or crisis counselling preferred;

preference given to Six Nations of the Grand River Band Members, persons of Haudenosaunee ancestry, or persons of Indigenous ancestry.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with legislation, regulations, and guidelines related to working with children, youth, and families.

Knowledge of Haudenosaunee culture and contemporary social issues within the Six Nations structure.

Understanding of the impacts of multi‑generational trauma on families and community.

Knowledge of other community services and resources.

Working Conditions

Direct client contact with some risk; duties may involve travel in and outside the community.

May require after‑school, evening, and weekend hours at on‑ and off‑reserve locations.

Work is physical and may occur outdoors in year‑round weather conditions at land‑based and water‑based locations.
