Accountable to: Chief of Police and Transformation Justice Director

Summary of Function

To assist and understand the needs of victims/witnesses/survivors and provide a full range of services, in a manner which is respectful, compassionate, trauma informed, bias-free, culturally appropriate, and impartial. Services include needs assessment(s), safety planning, crisis intervention, provision of information, emotional support and/or referrals, during a victim/witness/survivor’s engagement with the Listuguj Police Department and/or Haven House, including but not limited to the criminal justice process/inquests and inquiries.

Job Duties
  • The Victim Specialist will work with internal and external stakeholders to enhance victim assistance, understanding and participation in the investigative process, criminal justice system and other processes;
  • Acts as liaison between victim/witness/survivors and police to advocate for their needs/interests, to provide information on services and assistance, to improve their understanding of and participation in the process, and to facilitate the provision of services to support victim/witnesses/survivor’s individual needs.
  • Discusses safety concerns and options with victim/witness/survivors. Provide crisis intervention services, which include assistance directed toward de-escalation and safety planning.
  • Work with community partners and victim support organizations to facilitate relevant, culturally appropriate referrals for victims, including culturally appropriate victim services for indigenous victims, when available.
  • Maintains assigned caseload; prepares and maintains confidential reports and keeps detailed case notes to serve as supplementary information for Listuguj Police Department officers.
Requirements
  • Human Services diploma or degree in a related Human Services field of study such as Social Work
  • Minimum of three (3) years of recent related experience
  • Knowledge of social service delivery systems, court and police procedures and family violence issues considered an asset
  • Possess a valid driver license
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture, history and issues impacting indigenous members and their communities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the rights of victims as defined by Federal/Provincial Legislation.
  • Knowledge of CAVAC Program.
  • Strong understanding of the guidelines of victim confidentiality and privacy.
  • Sound judgement and decision-making skills through analytical/critical thinking.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background/Vulnerable Sector check.
