About Us  Teladoc Health Canada is a virtual care provider that proudly serves over 9 million Canadians across the country, leveraging proprietary health signals and personalized interactions to drive better health outcomes across the continuum of care.
Summary of Position  We’re looking for a Backend Software Engineer to join our growing engineering team and help build reliable, scalable backend systems that power our virtual care platform. In this role, you’ll work closely with senior engineers, product managers, and cross‑functional partners to design, build, and operate backend services and APIs used by critical healthcare workflows.
This is a hands‑on role ideal for an engineer who enjoys learning modern backend patterns and growing their technical depth in a regulated, mission‑driven environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities   Design, build, and maintain backend APIs and services using Java and Spring Boot, following established engineering standards, architectural patterns, and quality practices.
Work closely with product, frontend, QA, and platform engineers to clarify requirements and deliver backend capabilities aligned with roadmap and patient‑care outcomes.
Contribute to a modular, extensible API and service architecture that integrates cleanly with internal platforms and external partner systems.
Design and implement robust data‑access layers, including schema evolution, complex queries, and secure support for data migration and backward compatibility.
Apply event‑driven and asynchronous design patterns to support scalable, resilient workflows and downstream integrations.
Write, execute, and maintain unit, integration, and contract tests; actively participate in debugging, root‑cause analysis, and system reliability improvements.
Use team self‑service and platform tooling to provision, deploy, and operate services across environments, collaborating with Dev Ops and SRE where needed.
Build backend services with security, privacy, and compliance in mind, adhering to healthcare data protection requirements and internal controls.
Participate actively in code reviews, offering constructive feedback and continuously improving code quality, consistency, and maintainability.
Consistently follow documented standards for security, documentation, testing, and deployment to ensure predictable, production‑ready delivery.
Continuously learn and apply current backend technologies, patterns, and tooling that improve delivery quality, scalability, and developer effectiveness.
Supervisory Responsibilities  No
Qualifications  Required   5+ years of professional backend software development experience building and supporting production systems.
A bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience that demonstrates the same depth.
Strong experience designing, building, and operating backend services and APIs using Java, Spring Boot, or comparable frameworks.
Solid understanding of RESTful API design, service‑to‑service communication, and contract‑driven integration.
Hands‑on experience with relational databases, data modeling, schema evolution, and performance‑aware query design.
Experience writing and maintaining automated tests and contributing to CI/CD pipelines.
Working knowledge of cloud‑native concepts, including containers, service configuration, observability, and multi‑environment deployments.
Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, product, QA, and platform teams.
Practical experience with event‑driven or asynchronous systems (messaging, workflows, background processing).
Exposure to microservices or modular service architectures with an emphasis on maintainability and operational readiness.
Nice to Have   Experience working in regulated, compliance‑driven, or healthcare environments.
Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards such as HL7 FHIR.
Experience supporting production systems, including operational ownership, on‑call participation, or incident response.
Salary  $60.10 to $72.12 per hour
Position Type  Net New
Work Environment  Hybrid (Office & Remote)
