Overview
We’re looking for a Traffic Technician to join Clarington’s Public Works team!

The Municipality of Clarington is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Traffic Technician to join our Public Works team. Reporting to the Traffic Supervisor, you will play a key role in enhancing roadway safety and supporting municipal traffic management initiatives. This position focuses on traffic data analysis, technical studies, and developing evidence-based solutions to improve traffic operations and road safety across the municipality.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct traffic studies and analyze data to recommend improvements.

Support development of traffic management strategies and initiatives.

Identify, implement, and maintain traffic calming measures.

Operate and manage electronic traffic data collection equipment (e.g., radar boards, counters, cameras).

Assist with the Traffic Calming Policy program, including coordination and implementation.

Prepare reports and contribute to presentations for Council and the public.

Manage traffic sign inventory and the retro-reflectivity program, including inspections, budgeting, and replacements.

Support overall Traffic Division operations and safety initiatives.

Perform other duties as assigned, including those specific to the department.

What You Bring

Diploma from a 3-year Community College program in Transportation Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

Minimum 1 year of progressive, related experience.

O.A.C.E.T.T. certification (Technician/Technologist) is an asset.

Strong knowledge of:

Ontario Traffic Manuals (OTM)

Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) guidelines

Municipal Act

Highway Traffic Act

Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with GIS (ESRI) and traffic software/tools is an asset.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Excellent communication and report-writing abilities.

Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Valid First Aid and WHMIS certification.

Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence and clean driver’s abstract.

Physically able to lift equipment, climb ladders, and use basic tools.

Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

What We Offer

Wage: $34.66 to $43.27 - Code 6 of the 2026 Outside Collective Agreement.

Hours of work: 40 hours per week including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Additional Information
Public Works Employees are subject to standby, on call duty and may be required to work out of any Public Works location depending on work schedules and staff requirements. Employees hired externally or from another Department will be scheduled into shifts Monday through Sunday. The successful candidate will be expected to respond to after-hours to support traffic related functions or special events.

A satisfactory criminal record check and proof of qualifications will be required for the successful candidate, including:

Proof of a current Driver’s Abstract, and a valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License.

Proof of a valid First Aid and WHMIS Training Certificate.

Pre-employment testing may consist of written and oral assessments. To be considered successful, candidates must achieve a minimum score of 60% on each test. The highest score attained across the assessments will be used in the final award decision.
