Responsible for the overall coordination of swim lessons and supporting the smooth operation of the City’s Swim Center. This role includes oversight of the Swim Center in absence of the Aquatics Program Manager, assisting with staff scheduling, training, and monitoring facility safety.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Assigns work or coordinates work of Swim Instructors and Lifeguards.

The individual in this position is expected to engage in the following work-related activities.

Swim Lessons
  • Oversee the scheduling, enrollment, transfers, waitlists, and cancellations for all public swim lessons, ensuring smooth and efficient operation.
  • Provide a program/class atmosphere that promotes and encourages inclusion and satisfaction of all participants.
  • Provide training for new lifeguards, swim instructors and current staff.
  • Teach basic swim lessons approved by the Canby Swim Center. Provide a training atmosphere that promotes inclusion and satisfaction of all participants. Teach school lessons as needed. Lead in‑services and lifeguard classes.
Aquatic Center Support
  • Monitor and manage building activities during afternoons and closing hours, ensuring safety and compliance with facility protocols.
  • Aid in the development and management of staff schedules, ensuring adequate coverage and efficient use of resources.
  • Develop and update content for the City Swim Center’s website and to ensure consistent and effective communication.
  • Provides customer service at the front counter. Greet the public; provide information and assistance regarding schedules, registration, program descriptions and other general information over the phone and in person. Accept and receipt payments from customers.
  • Complete applicable reports and records.
  • Represent the City in a positive and professional manner. Respond to questions from citizens and visitors. Direct visitors to desired locations. Provide general assistance as needed.
  • Perform general housekeeping duties in and around the Swim Center facilities. Clean pool deck, locker rooms and rest rooms. Perform other general housekeeping duties in and around the Swim Center, i.e. hosing, vacuuming, picking up litter, etc.
Safety
  • Monitor and enforce safety standards for all participants, teams, staff, and guests, ensuring a safe environment throughout the facility.
  • Provide life‑guarding services. Respond to emergency situations, rescue persons in distress or in danger of drowning. If necessary, administer CPR/First Aid. Prepare and submit accident/incident reports.

Competency Profile
  • Efficient administrative and organizational skills for managing scheduling, enrollment, and related tasks.
  • Expertise in training and instructional skills.
  • Proficiency in creating and maintaining effective communication materials and channels.
  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of swimming, life guarding and water safety.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of first aid and CPR.
  • Understanding of the operations, services and activities of a public swimming facility.
  • Knowledge of appropriate safety precautions and procedures for a swim center and ability to respond both mentally and physically to any emergencies that arise.
  • Ability to present a positive public image through quality of work, leadership and good public relations.
  • Comfortable working with participants of all ages.
  • Good physical swimming ability and personal safety skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Equivalent to the completion of a high school diploma
  • Four to five years of increasingly responsible lifeguarding, water safety or swimming instruction experience.
  • Or any satisfactory combination of education, experience, and training that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the above duties.
  • Possession of current/valid Lifeguard Training, CPR, AED, and first aid certifications.
