Mō Tēnei Tūranga Mahi – About the RoleTake your electrical trade expertise beyond the tools and into the classroom. Ara Institute of Canterbury is seeking an Academic Staff Member – Electrical Trades to join our Applied Technology Faculty at the Woolston Trades Campus on a permanent, full-time basis.
In this hands-on teaching role, you’ll deliver practical and theory-based electrical training aligned with current industry standards, supporting apprentices and learners on their pathway to EWRB registration. You’ll be part of a collaborative, values-led organisation that invests in your professional development, supports new educators, and is deeply committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, equity, and learner success. This is a great opportunity for an experienced electrician looking to give back to the industry and help shape the future workforce.
- A degree/trade qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
- Current industry/discipline knowledge
- An Ara-recognised teaching qualification (where an appointment is made without such a qualification, the appointee will be required to obtain an appropriate qualification within three years of appointment)
- A skilled practitioner in the Electrical industry with a significant amount of recent practical experience
- Management skills in the electrical industry
- Vision, innovation and a commitment to facilitating own and others’ learning.
- Capable of supporting students to achieve their learning outcomes.
- The ability to develop and implement flexible teaching and learning methods, including the use of learning technologies
- Time management skills, including the ability to effectively and efficiently administer, organise and co-ordinate activities and meet deadlines.
- Engagement with assessment and feedback processes.
- Teaching experience (if senior academic staff member)
- Digital literacy including – competence using a computer (including Microsoft office products)
- Effective communication with a diverse range of others, at all levels within and outside the organisation
