System Development Officer – GIS & LLPG

Canterbury City Council is looking for a GIS Officer to join their Digital Services team. You will help develop the council’s GIS services as we modernise the Esri ArcGIS Enterprise server architecture.

About this job

You will work with the Digital Services team to develop, support and manage geographic information‑based monitoring systems throughout the council.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the council’s geospatial databases ensuring data integrity, accuracy, proper structure and accessibility.
  • Produce corporate geographic information policy overlays for planning, development strategy and community insight data.
  • Create, maintain and implement the corporate Land and Property Gazetteer.
  • Develop and continuously improve geospatial systems to support the council’s digital delivery agenda.
  • Provide user support and training at all levels, tailoring training to audience.
Working pattern
  • Monday – Friday excluding bank holidays
  • Full‑time 37 hours a week
  • Permanent contract
  • Hybrid model – normally on site at least once a fortnight, may vary by project.
  • Flexible working arrangements to maximise productivity.
About you

Knowledge

  • GIS, LLPG, street naming and numbering
  • Specialised software packages such as ArcGIS
  • Ordnance Survey mapping and digitising techniques
  • Digital systems implementation
  • Agile principles and methodology

Experience

  • Working with and analysing spatial data
  • Maintaining an LLPG compliant to BS7666
  • Understanding LLPG Data Entry Conventions and BS7666 standards for gazetteers
  • Communicating with users and stakeholders to capture requirements and align on technical designs
  • Meeting deadlines and prioritising simultaneous requests in large corporate systems
  • Collaborating with technical development teams to deliver architecturally sound, maintainable and scalable solutions
Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree (or equivalent relevant experience)

Due to the nature of this role, a basic DBS check is required as part of pre‑employment clearances.
