As a regional council, we are responsible for managing natural resources including air, soil, water and land. We work in partnership with mana whenua Ngāi Tahu to protect the health of our environment to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for our region.

The region’s evolving environmental and political context means we will continue to be agile and adaptive, as we respond to regulatory and environmental changes.

Our mahi (work) is organised around the delivery of our three core services:

  • Environmental Regulation and Protection
  • Community Preparedness and Response to Hazards
  • Public Transport

As a Lakes Ranger, based in Twizel, you’ll support the Coast and Harbours team to ensure boating safety across South Canterbury’s lakes and inland waters. You’ll maintain signage and aids to navigation, skipper vessels, and engage with communities to promote boating safety and environmental protection. This role also involves monitoring lake activities, responding to incidents, and working collaboratively with stakeholders to uphold safety and compliance standards.

Key responsibilities:

  • Install and maintain navigation safety signage and aids
  • Skipper and maintain lake vessels
  • Engage with communities on boating safety and biosecurity
  • Monitor lake boating activities and support pollution response
  • Build strong relationships with boating clubs and local authorities

This is a permanent part-time position, 24 hours per week.

You’re passionate about the environment and enjoy working outdoors. You’re practical, safety-conscious, and confident working on the water. You’ll have strong communication skills and the ability to work independently.

Ideally, you have experience in environmental monitoring or compliance and are comfortable working independently.

  • Boat master Certificate and VHF Operators Certificate
  • Minimum NCEA Level 2 or equivalent
  • At least 3 years’ experience in boating safety or similar environment
  • Ability to work weekends, public holidays, and outdoors in all weather
