Community Liaisons - Southern

We are looking for people who are energetic and motivated to help support, encourage and facilitate meaningful public involvement in the Māori Electoral Option. The primary responsibility of the Community Liaison is to enrol, educate and support public participation in the New Zealand electoral system, working closely with the wider Community Engagement team.

This role pays the Living wage and is based on the needs of the business and our communities.

Due to the nature of this casual role, Community Liaisons will be expected to work flexible hours, including evening and weekend work, to support and facilitate events and engagements.

You are someone who enjoys meeting new people, is values driven, collaborative and ready to champion public participation in the upcoming general elections. We’re looking for people who are confident with engaging with individuals and groups in a friendly, approachable way whether at community events, in schools or out in busy public spaces where communities naturally gather. You will be organised and reliable working in a role that’s varied and busy.

You will have strong communication skills and a can-do attitude with a willingness to supporting others to understand how to participate in the electoral system.

Above all, we want people who are community-minded and enthusiastic by this opportunity to make a real difference to supporting public participation in the upcoming general election.

• Attend agreed training, events and appointments.
• Enrol eligible public to vote, and where appropriate update details for those already enrolled.
• Provide voters of Māori descent with information about the Māori Electoral Option to ensure they are informed and can make their choice and change rolls within the legislated time.
• Provide all voters with correct information about the new changes incurred by the Electoral Amendment Act 2025.
• Provide the public with key Commission messaging and information to support education about New Zealand’s system of democracy, how the system works and what people need to do to participate.
• Identify gathering places and/or community events where a presence may encourage disengaged people to enrol and vote.
• Visit locations, communities and community events where there are known low rates of voter participation.
• Provide regular and comprehensive feedback to the Community Engagement Advisors or Senior Advisors around the activity that you carry out.
• Discuss and digitally record your work and activities.
• Set up, pack up, and maintain equipment (Pull up screens, Posters, storage equipment, give-aways, etc.).
• Have a valid New Zealand drivers’ licence.

The Electoral Commission wants every New Zealander to trust, value and take part in parliamentary elections. We are an independent Crown Entity who works with and through communities to inform, engage and educate New Zealanders about the value of participation, make it easy for them to enrol and vote, promote understanding of New Zealand's democratic processes, and deliver parliamentary elections and referenda.
