The Special Education Teacher is responsible for a variety of duties including, but not limited to academic planning, delivering individualized and group instruction, assisting with daily living skills and person care instruction to the students. This position reports to the Special Education Director or his/her designee. It is a full time, salaried, exempt position. Hours of work may be varied dependent upon the licensure status of the teacher.

Ten weeks vacation is provided with this position.

Essential Duties of the Position
  • Must be willing to learn about the JRC students, their disabilities and the forms of treatment provided at JRC.
  • Must be willing to be responsible for the safety and welfare of the JRC students.
  • Must be able to understand the gravity of their responsibility for the safety and care of the JRC students and be willing to perform their duties diligently.
  • Supervises and provides individual and group instruction to students.
  • Supervises and provides ongoing training to direct care staff assigned to the classroom.
  • Rewards, evaluates, and provides feedback to staff assigned to the classroom.
  • Writes and follows daily schedule.
  • Knows where each student is at all times and takes a head count at random times while emergency evacuation drills are being held.
  • Works in conjunction with the subject matter teachers in assigning daily lessons and homework.
  • Provides quarterly assessments and information for reports as needed.
  • Addresses the goals and objectives of each student’s IEP in appropriate area.
  • Writes bi‑weekly lesson plans which indicate the goals and objectives/benchmarks in IEP.
  • Submits comprehensive and complete bi‑weekly lesson plans, charts, homework when due.
  • Attends progress review meetings and develops goals and objectives for IEPs.
  • Attends all IEP meetings (Annual review) for each student and provides a verbal summary of student progress or lack thereof to the district and parent.
  • Administers Educational, Vocational, and other assessments as assigned.
  • Attends weekly meetings held by the Special Education Director or his/her designee.
  • Meets with the Special Education Director at least quarterly to discuss Professional Development Plan.
  • Suggests changes in student’s behavioral and/or educational program to supervisor.
  • Attends Parents’ Visiting Day to meet with parents.
  • Assists with transport of students to and from medical appointment when asked.
  • Assists in loading and unloading the vans and busses in the morning and afternoon.
  • Submits request/suggestion forms to the Director of Education or his/her designee regarding supplies needed.
  • Reads JRC Discussion Board and posts a minimum of 1 message every 2 weeks.
  • Reads and corrects posts made to discussion board by the students.
  • Participates in at least two hours per month of in‑service training.
  • Engages in incidental learning whenever possible.
  • Reports damage (to include property that has been exposed to any bodily fluids/secretion) to JRC property on End of Shift form.
  • Reports abuse to JRC and appropriate agencies.
  • Has working telephone so they may be contacted.
  • Acts as “Head of Provider”, when needed to monitor and approve emergency restraint.
  • Acts as “Staff in Attendance”, when needed during a restraint.
  • Assists injured staff in filling our appropriate forms, notifies appropriate personal, and obtains medical care if needed. (If injury occurs on a weekday, 9‑5, escorts injured staff to Injury Coordinator.)
  • Assists with transport of students to and from medical appointments when asked.
  • Assists in loading and unloading the vans and busses in the morning and afternoon.
  • Demonstrated Skills
    • Possess excellent interpersonal /communication skills.
    • Reacts to change productively and handles other essential tasks as assigned.
    • Uses a computer for word processing.
    • Follows student’s behavioral program as written in treatment plan and arranges appropriate consequence.
    • Knows state/federal educational regulations for disabled persons.
