Precision Injection Mold Tooling Machinist
At Con Met’s Canton, NC facility, your craftsmanship keeps production humming. On our day shift, you’ll partner with a tight-knit Tooling team to build, tune, and sustain large plastic injection molds that power the Class 8 heavy truck market. If tight tolerances, clean finishes, and problem‑solving on complex tooling are your strengths, you’ll thrive here.
A day in the lifeYou start by reviewing the molding schedule, prioritizing insert changes and tool readiness. You interpret blueprints and CAD models, set up a manual mill or lathe, and bring a surface grinder online to achieve flawless surfaces. Throughout the day you verify dimensions with micrometers, calipers, and thread/plug gauges, documenting precision results. You’ll watch molds in operation to catch issues early, perform preventative maintenance, and complete daily crane and rigging inspections to keep the shop safe and efficient.
Whatyou will do
- Translate job specs, blueprints, and CAD data into precise machining plans and setups.
- Set up, operate, and maintain manual mills, lathes, and surface grinders to fabricate, modify, and repair injection molding tools and components.
- Machine to exacting tolerances, delivering accurate dimensions and high-quality finishes.
- Adjust machines/fixtures using scales, rules, calipers, micrometers, and thread or plug gauges.
- Monitor the molding schedule to coordinate tooling readiness, including insert changes.
- Observe molds in production to identify tooling issues or machine malfunctions.
- Measure molds and parts to confirm conformance and machine accuracy.
- Inspect all cranes and related equipment daily.
Perform preventative maintenance on tools and molds.
- High school diploma or GED.
- One-year certificate from a college or technical school and three years of machine shop experience required; an equivalent blend of education and experience may be considered.
- Hands‑on proficiency with surface grinders, lathes, and mills.
- Ability to safely use overhead cranes and a forklift.
- Skill in reading micrometers and interpreting CAD drawings and blueprints; ability to follow detailed instructions.
