Purpose and Scope

This role is part of Engineering Manufacturing Excellence & Reliability and is responsible for improving workforce productivity and asset reliability by eliminating potential delays caused by repeat failures and by leading the effort to improve asset reliability. The reliability engineer will lead the effort to standardize and implement reliability programs focused on the overall life cycle cost of the assets. The reliability engineer is focused on the life cycle cost of assets and leads the efforts directed at reliable and maintainable asset design.

All opportunities to proactively improve asset reliability to increase plant productivity, improve performance, and reduce total cost of operation/ownership will be captured while complying with and enhancing EHS standards. Steel Manufacturing is an extremely asset intensive business where this key position is required to reduce risk and reduce costs. The reliability engineer plays an essential role in efficiently analyzing and communicating results of utilizing and managing our maintenance and contractor work forces, and works across plant boundaries to establish standard practices dealing with asset reliability and design.

Responsibilities
  • Lead teams to develop ideas directed at optimized asset performance, including asset standardization, qualifications for repairs, asset specifications, replacement strategies, criticality assessment process, elimination of repeat asset failures, and lowering total life cycle costs.
  • Analyze complex data with multiple goals: monitoring current processes, developing new KPIs, data mining for continuous improvement opportunities, cost/benefit analysis of future projects/process implementations, assimilating data from multiple databases and formats. Techniques such as SPS, Weibull, Six Sigma, RCA, NPV, FMEA are used.
  • Champion recommendations of projects identified during analysis, leading implementation of local or business‑wide process improvements.
  • Promote reliability practices across the business, consult professional societies, develop and maintain key metrics, and lead plans to improve performance where metrics lag from best practices.
  • Develop systems, formulas, and processes around asset critical inventory strategies, stocking levels, usage rates, stocking practices, and records of criticality and PM optimization.
  • Lead implementation of improvement plans via project management with cross‑functional teams, improving structured work identification processes, using Maintenance Task Assessment or Maximo Preventative Maintenance modules, and optimizing Mean Time Between Failure evaluations.
Technical Skills
  • Industrial maintenance experience with exposure to a union environment.
  • Heavy industrial reliability experience with condition‑based monitoring, work identification, and asset criticality analysis.
  • Experience in standardization of asset hierarchy and criticality.
  • Root Cause Failure Analysis on heavy industrial or steel‑making equipment.
  • Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, Failure and Mode Effects Analysis.
  • Maintenance Task Analysis, Reliability Centered Maintenance program development.
  • Predictive Maintenance program development, life‑cycle cost analysis, vendor qualification and testing.
  • Read and understand engineered drawings.
  • Experience with Maximo (preferred).
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office.
  • Industrial systems knowledge: hydraulics, pneumatics, PLC, industrial drives, power transmission.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Statistical analysis techniques experience.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School or GED with a minimum of 5 years of planning and scheduling, reliability engineering, spares inventory, and/or steel manufacturing.
  • Associates Degree in Engineering, Business, Economics, or Statistics with a minimum of 2 years of planning and scheduling, reliability engineering, spares inventory, and/or steel manufacturing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High School or GED with a minimum of 7 years of planning and scheduling, reliability engineering, spares inventory, and/or steel manufacturing.
  • Associates Degree in Engineering, Business, Economics, or Statistics with a minimum of 4 years of planning and scheduling, reliability engineering, spares inventory, and/or steel manufacturing.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with a minimum of 2 years of planning and scheduling, reliability engineering, spares inventory, and/or steel manufacturing.
