CNC Hard Turning Lathe Programmer-Operator
A day in this role:
You open your station, pull up the latest print, and translate GD&T into a clean program—Mazatrol for a Mazak or G/M code for a DMG Mori. You stage tools and fixtures, transfer your program from the server to the CNC through the network link, and hard-turn metal to hold tolerances as tight as 0.0001″. Throughout the run, you verify dimensions with precision instruments, monitor surface condition, and sort any nonconforming pieces by defect type.
You capture setup notes and tool lists for the next run, complete quick preventive maintenance (grease, oil, coolant, filters), and hand off to the next shift with clear communication.
- Program, set up, and operate CNC lathes to hard-turn metal components while meeting quality and safety standards.
- Create programs from drawings using Mazatrol or G/M codes; apply GD&T fluently. Preferred platforms:
Mazatrol T, T32, Smart, Smooth X; CELOS exposure is a plus. - Measure and adjust to specification using gauges, templates, fixtures, and hand tools to consistently maintain 0.0001″ tolerances.
- Inspect completed parts for surface and edge defects; segregate and record defect types.
- Mount, align, and secure tools, attachments, fixtures, and work pieces using precision methods.
- Stop machines as required to remove parts or change tooling, setup, or workpiece placement per the machining sequence.
- Transfer programs via network from servers to CNC modules.
- Complete setups and efficiently run moderate to highly complex parts on CNC lathes.
- Meet critical engineering specifications as defined on prints and accurately interpret complex drawings.
- Identify and implement process improvements for safety, quality, and throughput.
- Develop thorough setup sheets, tool lists, and related manufacturing documentation.
- Communicate effectively with Manufacturing Management and fellow Machinists during shift changes and process updates.
- Perform routine PM on machines (grease, oil, coolant, filters) and maintain equipment and supplies.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 5+ years of CNC lathe setup and operation across various materials.
- Strong math aptitude; able to read and understand machine programs.
- Clear communicator; works from verbal and written instructions with minimal supervision.
- Partners with EHS personnel and performs work in a manner that protects personal and team safety.
- Occasionally lift 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and climb stairs.
- Use required PPE: eye, hearing, hand, foot protection, and other PPE as needed.
- Work around oils, coolants, and standard machine shop chemicals.
- Must be able to speak English and collaborate in a team environment.
- GD&T, CNC tooling, CNC programming
- G-code and M-code
- Efficient machine setups for production runs
- CNC lathe (2–4 axis):
Mazak, DMG Mori Seiki - CNC lathe (5+ axis):
Mazak
