EARN UP TO $30,000 IN RECRUITMENT INCENTIVES — Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents will be offered a $20,000 incentive. The first $10,000 is paid upon successfully completing training at the Border Patrol Academy, and the remainder after a three-year service agreement. New BPAs accepting a prioritized location (Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Freer, Hebbronville, TX; Lordsburg, NM; or Ajo, AZ) will be eligible for an additional $10,000.
Duty assignments available at the time of offer may include the Southwest Border. U.S. Border Patrol determines duty assignments at offer time based on operational needs. Relocation may be required.

Duties And ResponsibilitiesAs a BPA, you will be part of the 60,000+ workforce that protects the American people by safeguarding borders, deterring illicit activity, and supporting the nation’s economic prosperity.
- Detect and question people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspect documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations.
- Prevent and apprehend aliens and smugglers near the borders by maintaining surveillance from covert positions, including the use of infrared scopes during night operations.
- Interpret tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry of persons or contraband.
- Perform farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks.
- Patrol the international boundary and coastal waterways using a variety of assets (vehicles, horses, vessels, watercraft, off-road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, motorcycles) to accomplish the USBP mission.
GL-9:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
- Performing physical searches of detained individuals, their vehicles, and their surroundings for weapons, contraband, currency, and other evidence.
- Apprehending, restraining, or working with law enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
- Proficient in the use of firearms, preparing investigative reports, serving court orders (e.g., warrants, subpoenas), and gathering evidence for criminal cases.
If you have prior law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at the GS-11 grade level.
GS-11:
You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, with authority to enforce laws, make arrests, and investigate crimes in an official law enforcement capacity, performing primary duties as a law enforcement officer:
- Utilizing intelligence information to track illegal operations, criminal activity, threats to the nation, and/or contraband while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
- Leading investigations of fraud, contraband, criminal activity, threats to the nation, and/or illegal operations to determine sources and patterns.
- Apprehending violators of state, federal, or immigration laws by using surveillance, detection, and communications technology.
There are no education substitutions for the GL-9 or GS-11 grade-level Border Patrol Agent opportunities.

You must have had primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years. - Age Restriction:
Applicants must be referred for selection before reaching the 40th birthday; exemptions may apply for certain federal law enforcement positions. - Veterans’ Preference:
Eligible for Veterans' Recruitment Appointment (VRA). The age restriction does not apply if you are Veterans' Preference eligible. - Formal Training:
After hire, you will attend the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM for approximately six months of intensive instruction in immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement, and USBP operations. Proficiency in Spanish is supported and training to improve language skills will be provided. - How To Apply:
