Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic

General Definition of Work

Performs work responsible for troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing and overhauling diesel and gas powered City vehicles and equipment, including heavy and light trucks, construction and boring equipment and tractors.

• Performs preventative maintenance on City vehicles and equipment; changes oil and transmission fluid; replaces fuel and air filters; inspects brakes, tires and suspension.
• Troubleshoots and diagnoses engine failures; repairs diesel, gasoline and propane engines.
• Determines extent of repairs needed and inspects equipment to identify causes of mechanical failure and parts requiring replacement.
• Diagnoses and repairs ignition and electrical systems (including computerized), steering and control systems and hydraulic systems.
• Uses a variety of test equipment and shop type tools to identify and repair mechanical issues.
• Diagnoses and repairs transmissions, electrical and hydraulic failures.
• Fabricates and engineers repairs of broken parts; performs welding tasks.
• Operates appropriate diagnostic equipment.
• Responds to emergency call out situations as required.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• High School graduate or equivalent.
• Three (3) years experience in maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Must comply with Missouri CDL requirements and maintain a valid Class “B” or better CDL with air brake endorsement.

• Preference may be given for ASE certification or other appropriate specialized training.
• Preference may be given to those who hold a Class “A” CDL license with air brake endorsement.

Salary per hour $27.56, plus a generous benefit package.

• Bi-weekly pay periods.
• Twelve paid holidays per year.
• 96 hours of vacation – accrued throughout the year.
• 96 hours of sick leave – accrued throughout the year.
• 2 days of personal leave per fiscal year. Must be employed on July 1 of the fiscal year to receive.
• City paid monthly premiums for health and dental insurance – Employee only.
• City paid monthly life insurance for employee only (1 times annual salary up to $50,000).
• Optional group term life insurance purchased at employee’s expense.
• Optional vision insurance purchased at employee’s expense.
• Voluntary deferred compensation plan – not matched by the City.

• Total compensation value (Hourly starting rate plus benefits value) for this position is $39.47 hourly/$82,094 yearly.

Before final appointment, successful applicant will be required to successfully complete a drug test, background investigation and pre-employment physical.
