Job Description

Perform professional accounting work, including compilation, consolidation and analysis of financial data. The role requires an understanding of accounting fundamentals and principles, as well as experience in bookkeeping. Key responsibilities include maintaining general ledgers, preparing journal entries, fixed asset accounting, bank reconciliations, management of control accounts (debtors, creditors), reserve analysis and the preparation of trial balances and financial statements.

Key Result Areas
  • Monitor and reconcile assets held at asset managers against liability balances and analyse variances.
  • Agree bank and asset transactions with trade order instructions from the administration system.
  • Monitor all other relevant controls to ensure ledgers are accurately produced.
  • Perform daily bank reconciliations.
  • Liaise with external and internal auditors, preparing audit schedules and working papers.
  • Prepare asset (investment funds) and bank reconciliation packs monthly (for review).
  • Prepare quarterly financial packs for management and board meetings.
  • Prepare statutory returns (quarterly exchange control and other statutory reporting such as C48).
  • Peer review asset and bank reconciliations when required.
  • Prepare balance sheet reconciliations and clear items on balance sheet reconciliations (control accounts, debtors & creditors).
  • Create new, complex and varied reconciliations with little input required.
  • Define, test and document process and control changes when required.
  • Prepare annual financial statements in accordance with regulatory reporting requirements for Pension/Provident Funds in South Africa.
  • Prepare accurate and complete monthly and year end journals.
  • Prepare and/or monitor PAYE and PAYE reconciliations, investigate and resolve PAYE reconciling items.
Skills, Qualifications and Experience Required
  • Accounting Diploma or BCom Degree with a solid understanding of accounting principles.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Computer literacy – MS Office and advanced Excel required.
  • Experience in the financial services sector.
  • Previous experience in the Retirement (Pension/Provident) Fund industry is an advantage.
  • Strong analytical skills.

The appointment will be made from the designated group in line with the Employment Equity Plan of Old Mutual South Africa and the specific business unit in question.
