job purpose
we are seeking the services of a self-motivated and proactive librarian to work as part of a team at the bellville supporting the faculty of engineering and the built environment. The successful candidate needs to be service-oriented and manage the diverse information, learning, and teaching needs of the faculty of engineering and the built environment. The successful candidate would be expected to provide a wide range of services at this site and, when needed, at other sites of cput.
this position requires the librarian to work on saturdays and after‑hours shifts when required and needed.
you will need to be flexible and adapt to the constant changes that librarians face within the workplace, and that may occur within cput
job knowledge, skills and experience
- bachelor of library and information science (hons) or equivalent 4 year library and information science qualification, bachelor of information science (hons), or post graduate diploma in library and information science (pgdip lis)
and
- 3 years relevant experience in a higher education library environment, which includes collection-development, research support and training of students and staff.
- the person must be able and willing to work across different campuses of cput and on the after‑hours shift roster when required.
recommendations:
- postgraduate qualifications in lis or relevant fields linked to the faculty of engineering and the built environment will be an added advantage.
• experience in supervising branch activities in a higher education library environment.
• experience in supporting training, collection development and research in the engineering and built environment or higher education library.

key performance areas / principal accountabilities
- develop and manage collections of books and journals (both paper and electronic) for allocated departments
- deliver information literacy training sessions to students
- provide training programmes to post graduate students to support their research process
- assist researchers with literature searches using databases, printed resources, and the internet
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with academic staff and students
- manage and support the provision of reading lists in relation to allocated subject areas or departments
- deal with user enquiries, which may involve one‑on‑one advice sessions
- create awareness of information products and services to the allocated departments
- designing information products and services relevant to clients’ needs
- providing research support, which includes scholarly communication, research data management and metrics
- take responsibility and initiate the formulation of policies, processes and procedures.
