Job Purpose

The purpose of this job is to lecture in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the Unit of Applied Economics, specialising in the discipline of Applied Economics and Real Estate. The incumbent will be required to lead and drive the academic initiatives of the department such as programme and curriculum development, postgraduate supervision, research, as well as represent the department on different institutional forums.

The incumbent will be required to carry a full load of learning & teaching within the real estate and/or economics subjects.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Senior Lecturer;

Minimum requirements:

  • PhD in Economics, Property Economics, Construction Economics, Land Economics or Real Estate.
  • An underpinning Master in pure Economics or Real Estate with majors in Economics (Micro, Macro and Econometrics) up to and including Honour’s level.
  • Evidence of research outputs in DHET accredited journals
  • Evidence of post-graduate research supervision.
  • At least four (4) years’ full-time lecturing experience in Higher Education environment.
  • Knowledge and experience in curriculum design.

Lecturer:

Minimum requirements:

  • Master’s degrees in pure Economics, or Real Estate or MBA/MBL with majors in Economics (Micro, Macro and Econometrics) up to and including Honour’s level.
  • An underpinning qualification in Economics or Real Estate or Business Studies.
  • At least Two (2) years full-time lecturing in a Higher Education Environment or Four (4) years’ industry working experience in a business environment or real estate environment.

Recommended:
Lecturer

  • Experience using Blackboard (or any other similar LMS system) as a tool to teach and assess students.

Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

Teaching and Learning:

  • Lectures subjects within the field of Economics and Real Estate.
  • Compiles subject guides in compliance with University rules.
  • Uses appropriate teaching methods, practices and technologies.
  • Develops learning materials for students.
  • Assists students with problems in learning and appointment of tutors / mentors.
  • Workload allocation may change according to departmental / faculty needs as determined by the Head of Department. Accreditation
  • Adhere to Council of Higher Education accreditation policy and procedures.
  • Academic Management
  • Contributes to policy making and meets annual objectives pertaining to academic programmes.
  • Review teaching and learning.
  • Contributes to the development of academic related decision making. Acts as course leader.
  • Contributes to management of tutor activities.
  • Sets annual objectives pertaining to academic subjects and review teaching and learning practices.

Administration

  • Keeps the attendance registrar and personal progress reports on the syllabus developments.
  • Records learners’ results.
  • Assists with the registration of students. To supervise tests and examinations.
  • Examine and moderate assessments and examinations.

Community Service & Outreach

  • Contributes to community initiatives by integrating community interventions into curriculum.

Quality Assurance

  • Contributes to Quality Assurance through committee meetings and submission of relevant documents.
  • Monitors the impact of QA recommendations within the department and implements appropriate interventions.

Recruitment / Admissions / Marketing

  • Contributes to the planning for "Open Day" and attends "Open Day".

Personal / Professional Development

  • Keeps abreast with developments in the field of study and their implications for curriculum.
  • Keeps abreast with developments of professional conduct within the University.
  • Register as a member of professional bodies to keep abreast of all developments.
  • Engages in current professional developments activities.
