Job Description & How to Apply Below
We are looking for a Junior Solar and BESS Engineer to develop solar and battery projects from the ground up: turning a client brief into a designed, modelled and costed solution that our business developers can present. This is a hands‑on technical role for someone who wants to learn how these systems work and how they are designed, costed and justified financially.
You will own the engineering and commercial groundwork behind every proposal.
- Receive project inputs from business developers (client requirements, electricity bills, load profiles, site details) and translate them into a clear technical brief.
- Conduct site visits where required to gather data, take photographs, verify constraints and understand the client requirement in detail.
- Produce preliminary system designs using Helio Scope and Forest Energy's internal design tools.
- Build energy and financial models that quantify savings, payback and return for the client.
- Complete costings and Bills of Quantities (BOQ) using company tools and rates.
- Request, receive and compare supplier quotes, and feed pricing into the costing.
- Package the design, model and costing back to the business developer for proposal compilation.
- Support the costing of tenders.
- Stay current with technology and standards in the solar and BESS industry at a technical level.
- A BEng / BTech engineering qualification (electrical, mechanical, electromechanical or related), with 0 to 3 years of experience. Recent graduates are welcome to apply.
- Genuine passion for renewable energy and a drive to learn how these systems work.
- Strong numerical and analytical ability, comfortable building and interrogating models in Excel.
- Attention to detail and the discipline to produce accurate costings and BOQs.
- Clear written and verbal communication, able to work closely with business developers.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to site.
- Right to work in South Africa.
- Exposure to Helio Scope, PVsyst or similar PV design software.
- Understanding of South African electricity tariffs (Eskom, municipal TOU) and demand charges.
- Familiarity with SANS / NRS standards relevant to embedded generation and PV.
- Knowledge of battery storage applications such as peak shaving and energy arbitrage.
