Job Description

The Data Center HV/MV Specialist Engineer (SE) is responsible for ensuring that all high voltage and medium voltage electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center is operating at peak efficiency. This involves both planned preventative maintenance of equipment, daily corrective work, and emergency response to emergent issues. The SE serves as a subject matter expert on high voltage and medium voltage equipment, reticulation and protection systems, and is a technical resource interacting with onsite Facility Managers, Engineering Operations Technicians (EOT), and third‑party vendors.

The SE is expected to be a focal point for the cluster’s high and medium voltage electrical infrastructure that supports operations.

The SE must also manage large‑scale electrical projects and new region support from conception to completion. This includes collaboration with engineering, automation, procurement, and finance teams, driving innovation and resiliency while reducing operational costs, and ensuring compliance with legal and international standards.

The SE directs, trains, and supports EOTs in troubleshooting and operational knowledge of medium and high voltage equipment, including HV switch gear, MV switch gear, protection systems, transformers, cables, and legislative requirements.

The role is based in Cape Town with flexibility required to travel to other locations within the MEA region.

• Oversee day‑to‑day operations and maintenance of medium and high voltage infrastructure
• Operate independently with limited direct management
• Assist in the design and build‑out of new MV and HV facility infrastructure
• Act as an escalation point for all facility‑related issues within the data center region and work OT hours as needed to support site stability
• Perform root cause analysis of MV/HV equipment failures
• Create and deploy new standard practices for Engineering Operations Technicians, Chief Engineers, and vendor support teams
• Provide training and guidance to Engineering Operations Technicians and assist in recruiting efforts
• Ensure safety procedures are adhered to by vendor and Amazon staff
• Use internal Change Management Systems to manage building workflows
• Perform MV/HV isolation to facilitate maintenance
• Provide metric availability reporting on a weekly basis
• Support all regions in the MEA
• Communicate complex technical information to a non‑technical audience

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
• Experience carrying new design concepts through exploration, development, and deployment or mass production
• Experience in project management
• HV and MV switching accreditation

• 5+ years of project management in data centers or comparable critical infrastructure
• Knowledge of engineering documentation, electrical diagrams and standard operating procedures
• Government Certificate of Competency
• Occupational Health and Safety certification
• GMR 2.1 Legal Appointment eligibility
