Job Overview

The Urban Mobility Planner will lead the design and implementation of integrated transport strategies for Cape Town’s metropolitan area. This role involves collaborating with municipal authorities, private sector partners, and community stakeholders to develop data‑driven solutions that improve public transit, promote active travel, and support the city’s climate resilience goals. The successful candidate will conduct comprehensive mobility assessments, model traffic scenarios, and propose infrastructure projects that align with national transport policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct detailed urban mobility studies, including travel demand forecasting, modal split analysis, and congestion mapping.
  • Develop strategic transport plans that integrate rail, bus rapid transit, cycling, and pedestrian networks.
  • Collaborate with city planners, engineers, and policy makers to align mobility projects with zoning regulations and environmental standards.
  • Prepare feasibility reports, cost‑benefit analyses, and funding proposals for municipal and national infrastructure programs.
  • Utilize GIS, traffic simulation software, and big‑data analytics to model future mobility scenarios.
  • Engage community groups and NGOs to gather input, ensure inclusive design, and promote public acceptance of new transport initiatives.
  • Monitor project implementation, track performance metrics, and recommend adjustments to meet targets.
Required Skills
  • Proficiency in transport modelling tools such as VISUM, Aimsun, or PTV Vistro.
  • Strong analytical abilities with experience in data visualization and GIS mapping.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Knowledge of South African transport legislation, National Development Plan, and climate resilience frameworks.
  • Project management expertise, including budgeting and timeline coordination.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Transport Engineering, or a closely related field is required. Candidates holding a Master’s degree or professional certifications such as PMP, CTP (Certified Transportation Planner), or a GIS specialization will be given preference.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five years’ experience in urban mobility planning, transport engineering, or related consultancy roles. Experience with public‑private partnership (PPP) projects, sustainable transport initiatives, or smart city programs is highly desirable.

Salary

The role offers a competitive annual salary ranging from SSP 350,000 to SSP 500,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based incentives and annual reviews are part of the compensation package.
