Job Description & How to Apply Below
You studied law. But you also built something. Maybe it was a Power BI dashboard to track your team's matter load, a SharePoint site, a script you put together to stop doing the same thing manually, a ChatGPT workflow that saved you two hours a week.
You didn't put it on your CV because you weren't sure it counted... It counts - and it's exactly what we're looking for.
Cognia Law is an Alternative Legal Services Provider. We deliver tech-enabled, process-driven legal services to global clients who need legal work done smarter, not just faster. Legal tech is central to how we do that, and the Legal Engineer role sits right at the heart of it - at the intersection of legal knowledge, technology and real problem-solving.
This isn't a role where you watch senior people do the interesting work. From early on, you'll be mapping legal workflows, testing and building tools, working with AI platforms and shaping how legal services get delivered. It's a role for someone genuinely curious about how technology can change an industry and who wants to be part of changing it.
Role Requirements
- A degree in Law, Commerce or a related field (Law strongly preferred).
- Real curiosity about legal technology - not just awareness of it, but genuine interest in how it works and where it's going.
- Evidence that you've used technology to solve a real problem - in a work context, a university project, or on your own time.
- Strong communication skills - you need to be able to translate between technical and legal thinking.
- A natural problem-solver - you can analyse a process, ask the right questions and spot a smarter way of doing things.
- Open to learning new tools and skills, whether that's basic coding, automation platforms or legal-tech applications.
- Hands-on experience with tools like Power Apps, Power BI, SharePoint or Dataverse.
- Exposure to coding or scripting - Python, JavaScript, SQL - even if self-taught.
- A portfolio, Git Hub, prototype or project you can point to and say "I built this"
- Experience using AI tools in a practical, applied way
- Support with mapping and documenting of legal processes, contributing insights and spotting opportunities to improve workflows.
- Help design and test workflows and legal-tech tools, taking ownership of components and tasks.
- Research emerging legal-tech trends, tools and platforms, and share findings with the team.
- Maintain and update legal-tech platforms, troubleshooting issues and suggest improvements where needed.
- Work closely with legal and technical teams to support the rollout and adoption of tools, helping users understand and apply them.
- Produce reports and data insights to support matter management, using data to help colleagues make informed decisions.
- Take part in ongoing training to build technical, legal-process and business understanding, and apply new skills to day-to-day work.
