General Reinsurance, Cape Town Branch (a subsidary of General Reinsurance AG) is offering an opportunity for Junior Life Underwriter in our Life Australia, UK, SA, Canada division.

Key Responsibilities

As a key member of the underwriting team, the Junior Life Underwriter will administer, implement, and promote all aspects of Gen Re’s underwriting philosophy and practice, ensuring high levels of service are consistently met and maintained. This role focuses primarily on day-to-day administration and technical underwriting, with occasional ad hoc duties as required.

Responsibilities

Administration of Underwriting Cases

Uploading and downloading data securely from designated platforms.

Pre-assessment of underwriting cases.

Conducting data lookups and searches relevant to the underwriting process.

Technical Underwriting of Life and Health Business

Apply Gen Re’s underwriting philosophy, rules, and guidelines.

Operate within agreed authority limits.

Provide technical underwriting advice to clients.

Participate in testing and implementation of AI in underwriting processes.

Interpret client contracts and policy terms and conditions accurately.

Ensure clear, concise, and accurate documentation for internal and external stakeholders.

Liaise with Consulting Medical Officers for case assessments.

Build and maintain strong client relationships.

Teamwork and Professional Development

Collaborate effectively within client teams, branch, and cross-unit projects.

Continuously improve technical and professional skills.

Qualifications & Experience

This role suits a life and health underwriter with at least2 years of experience who seeks to broaden technical underwriting skills. The successful candidate will enjoy working in a close-knit team, demonstrate strong analytical ability, and contribute to developing efficient and profitable underwriting practices.

Relevant tertiary qualification (Finance, Business, or Para-medical field).

2–5 years of life and health underwriting experience, preferably at a direct insurer.

Strong interest in technology and AI applications in underwriting.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to thrive in a collaborative, dynamic environment.
