A company in the Pharmaceutical & Cosmetic industry is looking for an Operations R&D Chemist to join their team in Cape Town. Duties will include, but are not limited to:
Optimize and refine existing skin care formulations to improve product performance. Proactively identify and evaluate new /alternative raw materials or suppliers to ensure continuous raw material supply, safety, regulatory compliance, and sustainability. Conduct lab-scale batching, optimize manufacturing procedures, and collaborate with pilot/production teams to successfully transition formulas from R&D bench to manufacturing scale. Participate in product reworks. Conduct and manage performance, efficacy, and compatibility testing of formulations & packaging.

Ensure all formulations / projects meet internal quality standards, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements. Maintain formulation records, test results, and adhere to standard operating procedures. Demonstrate strong administrative skills through the accurate and timely issuing, editing, and maintenance of MMIs. Effectively plan, track, and prioritises R&D activities. Liaising with raw material suppliers and follow-up on outstanding actions. Work with the Regulatory Team to ensure compliance with target markets.

Provide technical guidance and support to the QC and production departments in the investigation and resolution of OOS results, including formulation review, process evaluation, and recommendations for corrective actions. Stay current with the latest advancements in cosmetic science, raw material technology, and global regulatory changes.

Key Requirements: BSc Chemistry or related degree with 2-5 years’ hands on experience in formulation within the skincare or cosmetic industry. Cosmetic Science Qualification highly desirable.

Additional Requirements: Ability to work on various projects simultaneously with attention to detail and timelines. Excellent communication skills and the ability to write reports. Computer literate.
