The University of Cape Town Lung Institute is looking for a meticulous and reliable Laboratory Technician to support specimen processing, storage, and quality control within our Allergy and Immunology (AIU) Unit, ensuring all laboratory activities are conducted in line with study protocols and Good Clinical (Laboratory) Practice standards.
This role is offered under the University of Cape Town Lung Institute’s own employment terms and conditions, which are separate from UCT conditions of service.
⭐ What you bring:
- BSc Degree or National Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science or a related field.
- HPCSA registration (advantageous)
- GCP Certification (advantageous).
- GCLP Certification (advantageous).
- 1–5 years' experience in an immunology, clinical research or diagnostic laboratory.
- Experience handling human biological specimens.
- Experience performing immunological and molecular laboratory techniques.
- Experience working within laboratory quality management systems.
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office applications.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and scientific integrity.
- Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team
🚀 What you’ll own:
- Processing, storage and traceability of human biological specimens and maintenance of biobank records.
- Performing laboratory assays, including ELISA, CAST and ImmunoCAP, and supporting molecular laboratory workflows.
- Preparing samples for sequencing, proteomics and external laboratory testing.
- Maintaining study-specific laboratory documentation and electronic records.
- Maintaining laboratory equipment, temperature monitoring and quality-control records.
- Supporting laboratory audits, corrective actions and continuous quality improvement.
- Monitoring laboratory reagents and consumables and supporting procurement.
- Ensuring laboratory safety, biosafety and compliance with study protocols, GCP and GCLP requirements
📍 Role Information:
- Fixed Term Contract (12 Months)
- Monday to Friday | 40 hours per week
- Based at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH), Cape Town
