Senior Retail Shop Assistant

Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is a not-for-profit institution that exhibits, collects, preserves, and researches contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora; conceives and hosts international exhibitions; develops supporting educational, discursive and enriching programmes; encourages intercultural understanding; and strives for access for all.

The museum’s galleries feature rotating, temporary exhibitions with dedicated spaces for the permanent collection. The institution also includes the Centre for Art Education (CFAE), and the Atelier, a project space for emerging Cape Town-based artists.

Zeitz MOCAA is looking for an experienced and proactive Senior Retail Shop Assistant to support the smooth daily running of our museum retail store. This role is ideal for someone with strong retail operations experience who can take ownership of stock, merchandising, and store standards, while also being ready to step into a leadership capacity when needed.

• Managing stock replenishment to ensure consistent product availability
• Overseeing merchandising to maintain store standards
• Processing Inter-Branch Transfers (IBTs)
• Monitoring and responding to store e-mails
• Coordinating and managing shipping requirements
• Verifying that staff have completed daily tasks to standard
• Performing the daily cash-up process
• Posting daily sales figures within the store group
• Ensuring proper disarming and arming of the alarm system during opening and closing

• Conducting morning briefings with staff
• Leading Early Morning Training (EMT) sessions
• Completing the daily planner and ensuring alignment with store priorities
• Coordinating and performing stocktakes as required

• Previous experience in a senior retail or supervisory role
• Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent NQF level
• Minimum of 3 years’ work experience in related fields with supervisory experience
• Strong organisational and time-management skills
• Confidence leading a team and running briefings/training in a supervisor's absence
• Comfortable with cash handling, stock control, and administrative processes
• A team player with a proactive, standards-driven approach

• Highly personable, with excellent spoken and written English and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels
• Strong organisational skills with ability to effectively priorities and manage multiple tasks and coordinate a high level of activity under a variety of conditions and constraints and completion within deadlines
• Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
• Ability to close sales or conversions
• Strong computer skills, particularly in MS Word & Excel
• Excellent attention to detail
• Ability to manage confidential records and sensitive customer information
• Strong relationships, networking building and the maintenance of these
• Ability to work under pressure and be resilient
• Understanding of Point of Sales systems
• Collaboration
