Platform Engineer

My client based in Cape Town is currently looking for a Platform Engineer to join their team on a permanent basis.

IT / FINANCE

• Design, build and maintain scalable, secure and reliable internal developer platforms for engineering teams.
• Develop self-service platform capabilities, APIs, automation and tools that simplify software development and deployment.
• Build reusable platform components and abstractions that enable engineering teams to work more efficiently and independently.
• Implement and manage cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code tools and established best practices.
• Manage and optimise container platforms and Kubernetes environments.
• Implement and maintain Git Ops workflows for application deployment and infrastructure management.
• Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support automated builds, testing, deployment and delivery.
• Implement monitoring, logging, metrics and distributed tracing to improve system visibility and reliability.
• Troubleshoot complex platform, infrastructure and application issues to ensure system availability and performance.
• Apply cloud architecture best practices and Well-Architected Framework principles to platform design and implementation.
• Collaborate with software engineers and other technical teams to understand requirements and deliver effective platform solutions.
• Evaluate technologies, identify opportunities for automation and continuously improve platform capabilities.
• Promote platform capabilities as a product or service that meets the needs of internal engineering teams.

• 4+ years of experience as a Software Engineer, working with programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, Golang or Python.
• 3+ years of experience in Platform Engineering, building self-service platforms and tools for engineering teams.
• 4+ years of experience working with public cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or GCP.
• 4+ years of experience with containerisation technologies and container platforms.
• Strong experience in building and maintaining production-grade platforms, platform APIs, automation tools and internal developer platforms.
• Expert knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, CDK, Pulumi or Crossplane.
• Strong knowledge of Kubernetes, container orchestration and cloud-native technologies.
• Experience with Kubernetes Git Ops practices and tools such as Argo CD, Flux, Helm or Kustomize.
• Experience implementing monitoring and observability solutions using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Cloud Watch or X-Ray.
• Familiarity with Dev Ops practices and CI/CD tools such as Git Hub Actions and Git Lab CI/CD.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, service architectures, cloud-native systems and their design trade-offs.
• Relevant Kubernetes or public cloud certifications, such as CKA, AWS, Azure or GCP certifications, would be advantageous.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Expert technical knowledge of platform engineering, cloud infrastructure and Kubernetes.
• Strong software engineering and automation capabilities.
• Ability to design and build scalable, resilient and secure production-grade systems.
• Excellent understanding of Dev Ops, Git Ops, CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code practices.
• Ability to evaluate technical options and make informed architectural decisions.
• Strong focus on reliability, performance, security and operational excellence.
• A self-driven approach with the ability to take ownership of complex technical challenges.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills when working with engineering teams and stakeholders.
• A continuous improvement mindset with a willingness to learn, share knowledge and explore new technologies.
