Japanese Assistant Lecturer / Assistant Professor of Practice
The School of Languages and Linguistics (SLL) at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale (SIU) invites applications for a Non-Tenure Track (NTT) Japanese Assistant Lecturer or Assistant Professor of Practice, beginning August 11, 2026. This is a full-time, nine-month, annually renewable appointment with benefits. The successful candidate will teach a 4-4 course load (eight courses per academic year) and contribute to the Languages, Cultures, and International Studies (LCIS) program.
The ideal candidate will be an excellent instructor of Japanese language and culture and possess experience that can substantially support one or more other areas within the school such as Linguistics, International Studies, or East Asian Studies.
- Teach a 4-4 course load (eight courses per academic year).
- In addition to teaching Japanese language (all levels) and Japanese culture, instruct courses in one or more other areas in the school such as Linguistics, International Studies, East Asian Studies, or other relevant curricula based on candidate's areas of expertise program needs within the school.
- Maintain professional currency in the field of language pedagogy, Linguistics, and/or International Studies.
- Support and positively contribute to SIU's mission of student success and retention through actions and responsibilities within this role.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree or higher.
- Native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
- Ability to teach in one of the school's interdisciplinary areas (Linguistics, International Studies, East Asian Studies, etc.), both in person and online.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience incorporating technology (e.g., Learning Management Systems, Innovative Technologies) into foreign language instruction.
- Experience advising and mentoring students in Japanese, Linguistics, or International Studies.
