PURPOSE OF

THE ROLE

BBC Audio Wales and West of England brings together radio production teams in Cardiff and Bristol making programmes for the BBC's national radio services, the BBC World Service and BBC Sounds. Our staff have opportunities to collaborate, develop ideas, progress their careers and have the potential to work on a wide range of output across science, health, factual, rural affairs, food, documentaries, current affairs, music and drama.

This role is based in Cardiff at BBC Central Square. It’s one of the BBC's newest buildings, with state-of-the-art studios and outstanding environmental standards.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

We are looking for an interim Content Editor to lead BBC Radio 4 Topical programmes for 6 months based in Cardiff. Reaching almost 9 million listeners each week, BBC Radio 4 is the home of intelligent speech. This role is the editorial drive behind Radio 4's Any Questions?, Any Answers?, Last Word and Saturday Live with Adrian Chiles. These programmes attract listeners in their millions, with demanding and complex editorial.

But, for the right journalistic leader, these programmes present an opportunity to manage some of the BBC's longest running and most valued titles.

YOUR

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
  • To oversee the content of all four titles, as well as our people and logistics on those programmes. A knowledge, passion and interest in current affairs is required
  • To report to the Senior Head of Content Production for BBC Audio in Wales and the West of England and liaise with commissioners at Radio 4 to ensure the programmes meet the need of our audiences
  • To deal with external stakeholders, including dealing with high profile guests and politicians
  • Be committed to developing diversity in our content and workforce and have ideas on how you will do it
  • To manage budgets with production management colleagues and keep the production on track
  • Be responsible for driving, shaping and complying editorial, social and digital content, including visualised content
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Strong journalistic experience, with in-depth knowledge of UK politics and a keen eye for great stories, including expertise in producing and supervising legally and editorially complex output
  • Experience of leading and managing diverse teams, including presenters, and the ability to manage development and performance, to inspire others to do their best work
  • An in-depth knowledge of the UK and international audio market, including our main services; BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds
  • A good communicator with experience of developing and maintaining effective working relationships with high profile individuals, partners and organisations inside and outside the BBC
  • Highly developed planning and organising skills with the ability to manage several areas of work at one time, deliver to deadlines and to react positively to changes and conflicting priorities

While we are a flexible employer, we value in-person leadership. We see benefits in collaboration, faster communication and stronger mentorship. This role also oversees live output which broadcast on Friday evenings and Saturdays. The successful candidate will be expected to be in BBC Cardiff for a minimum of three full days a week, including Friday and Saturday.
