Position: Casualty Director Opportunity

Are you an emerging director with a passion for bold, character-led storytelling? Do you want the opportunity to develop your craft on one of the UK’s most iconic continuing dramas? This Casualty Director Opportunity 2026 is designed for a Welsh or Wales-based director ready to take the next step, gaining hands‑on experience in high-end TV drama and working towards a broadcast credit on Casualty.

Following the success of our previous director schemes, which has seen four directors gain eight credits across BBC Studios Drama Productions shows, we are now offering a unique opportunity to develop your skills on Casualty. This BAFTA and multi‑award-winning BBC Studios medical drama remains one of the UK’s most loved and longest‑running scripted series. Filmed at Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff, it continues to deliver powerful, character‑driven stories from the frontline of the NHS.

This is a paid opportunity and is designed to offer meaningful, hands‑on experience at every stage of production as the successful candidate works towards a credit on the show.

THE SCHEME

The successful candidate will shadow the preparation and filming of a two‑episode block of Casualty, gaining insight into the creative and technical processes involved in delivering a primetime television drama. You’ll observe how a director works closely with cast and crew, from pre‑production planning through to filming on set.

Following the shadowing period, the successful candidate will go on to direct the second episode of the block, with ongoing support and guidance from an experienced mentor director. This provides a rare opportunity to step into the directing role on a major BBC drama, applying your skills in a fast‑paced and collaborative environment.

Throughout the placement, you’ll develop your ability to work at pace, manage multiple creative demands, and deliver compelling, truthful performances within the style and tone of a continuing drama.

WHAT WILL IT TAKE?

Applicants must:
  • Be Welsh, or have a substantive base in Wales
  • Have a broadcast directing credit (30 minutes or more) in scripted drama (second‑unit experience considered)
Be available for the following dates:
  • w/c June 15 – in‑person and/or Zoom meetings
  • 21 September – 27 November for prep, shoot and post‑production of the episode

BBC Studios is committed to building a culturally diverse workforce and therefore strongly encourages applications from underrepresented groups. We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of their background.

APPLICATION

As part of the application, please submit the following:
