An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time (40 hours a week and also will participate in the out of hours rota) Higher Fellow post in Cardiothoracic Surgery based at the University Hospital of Wales.

Posts are available to start as soon as possible for 12 months. The unit undertakes all types of adult cardiac surgery including off-pump coronary surgery, complex mitral valve surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery & major surgery on the thoracic aorta including endovascular procedures and surgery for some adults with congenital heart disease.

These posts provide an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery and would be ideal for International candidates wishing to consolidate their knowledge through working in the UK. All posts are for one year with a possibility of extension thereafter.

Cardiff and Vale UHB is one of the largest health boards in the UK and is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

While these posts will not be recognised for postgraduate training they will take place in a teaching environment with ample learning opportunities.

A satisfactory disclosure check will be required of the successful applicants.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day care of patients on the Unit and responsible to the Consultant Surgeons for whom they work. The will be exposed to all aspects of Cardiothoracic Surgery performed in the Department. They are expected to participate in all clinical activities of the unit including perioperative care, operative management, as well as outpatient work.

They will be expected to supervise the standards of clinical work of more junior staff and for teaching them as appropriate to their needs.

The successful applicant will be expected to partake in the teaching commitments of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department, including teaching of undergraduates, nursing staff and postgraduate trainees.

All Junior Doctor posts in the UHB are compliant with the New Deal and the European Working Time Directive. You will be advised of the working pattern for this post prior to taking up your appointment.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in ongoing research and audit activities within the Department, and will be encouraged to initiate projects of his/her own. Excellent research facilities are available on site in the Wales Heart Research Institute the post holder will be invited to develop collaborative links appropriate to his/her research interests. It is expected that the successful candidate will present results at academic meetings and submit manuscripts to peer reviewed journals during the time they are in post.
