As a member of the Russell Group, Cardiff University is recognised as one of the 24 leading research-intensive UK universities. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (), Modern Languages and Linguistics at Cardiff University was ranked 7th of 57 submissions in the UK for the quality and impact of its research.

The School of Modern Languages is located within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and is home to approximately 900 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 54 academic staff. The School is recognised for its interdisciplinary teaching and research in Translation Studies, French, German, Spanish (with Catalan), Italian, Portuguese and Japanese. We are currently developing a suite of undergraduate programmes in Chinese Studies.

The School is also the home of a successful University wide ‘Languages for All’ programme, launched in September 2014. This is an integral part of Cardiff’s mission to extend its international reach. Staff and students are central to the vision of the School and the School and University invests in staff training and development in order to nurture leaders in research and teaching.

At this time of expansion and development, the School has the opportunity to make a number of key strategic appointments, including a Professorship in Translation Studies.

You will be an outstanding scholar and academic leader of international distinction in the field of Translation Studies. You will have the vision and proven capacity to lead colleagues in successful external research grant capture and you will have produced high impact research and high quality publications. You will be expected to contribute to the School’s teaching and curriculum development, above all at postgraduate levels, and to play an active role in the strategic management of the School.

The appointment is full time and ongoing.

Salary:
Point on the Cardiff Professorial scale.

The successful candidate will be expected to take up the post on or before 1st September 2015.

Job Description
  • To be an outstanding scholar and academic leader of international distinction in the field of Translation Studies.
  • To play a leading role in enhancing and developing the research culture in the School, and to lead and mentor colleagues in major grant applications and the production of high impact research and high quality publications.
  • To possess and maintain established research interests and expertise in any area of Translation Studies.
  • To contribute to the strategic planning and management of the School ensuring its continuing success as a world-leading centre for research, teaching and public engagement.
  • To work collaboratively and successfully with academic and non-academic communities on projects that have impact value.
  • To contribute as a senior member of staff to the teaching and management of the School’s programmes, above all at postgraduate levels.
  • To contribute to the pastoral care of students in the School.
  • To represent the School within and beyond the University, as appropriate.
  • To ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in respect of equality and diversity, data protection, copyright and licensing, security, financial and other University policies, procedures and codes as appropriate.
  • To take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and of other persons who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, EC directives and the University’s Safety, Health and Environment Policies and procedures and to cooperate with the University on any legal duties placed on it as the employer.
