Birchwood School is looking for a dedicated Positive Behaviour Learning Support Assistant to join our specialist team. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our pupils by promoting positive behaviour, emotional wellbeing, and successful learning outcomes within a nurturing and supportive environment.

As a Positive Behaviour Learning Support Assistant, you will work closely with pupils, teaching staff, and the wider multidisciplinary team to create a safe, positive, and engaging learning environment. You will provide targeted support to pupils who require additional behavioural and emotional guidance, helping them develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed both in and out of the classroom.

You will play a key role in promoting Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) approaches across the school, helping staff develop effective strategies and ensuring pupils receive the consistent support they need to thrive.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct support to pupils during periods of emotional dysregulation or challenging behaviour, ensuring their safety, wellbeing, and dignity at all times.
  • Signing off and quality check radar reports.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils to encourage engagement, independence, and personal development.
  • Support the implementation of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) strategies and individual behaviour plans.
  • Model best practice in behaviour management and de‑escalation techniques for colleagues.
  • Coach and mentor staff following observations.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and other professionals to promote positive outcomes for pupils.
  • Assist in identifying behaviour patterns and contributing to behaviour assessments and support plans. i
  • Deliver targeted interventions designed to develop emotional regulation, communication, and social skills.
  • Support staff training and promote a consistent, proactive approach to behaviour support throughout the school.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful school culture where every pupil feels valued and supported.
Essential What We’re Looking For
  • Experience working with children or young people with additional learning needs, autism, or behaviours that challenge.
  • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach to supporting children and young people.
  • Strong communication and relationship‑building skills.
  • The ability to remain resilient and adaptable in challenging situations.
  • A genuine passion for helping pupils overcome barriers to learning and development.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable
  • Experience with in a specialist educational setting.
  • Knowledge or experience of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) approaches.
  • Experience using behaviour support or de‑escalation techniques.
  • Relevant qualifications in education, childcare, health and social care, or behaviour support.
  • Experience delivering or supporting behaviour‑focused interventions.
