Overview

Assistant Signalling Engineer – permanent opportunity to join our Consulting Rail team in Cardiff or Bristol and work on innovative and complex signalling design solutions for a range of clients.

Key Projects

As an Assistant Signalling Design Engineer on some of the UK’s most significant and complex rail infrastructure projects including Wales & Borders. We support major programmes such as Northern Powerhouse Rail, Eastern Routes Partnership, Northwest & Central Framework, Core Valley Lines, Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade, and Cardiff Crossrail. Our in-house engineering team delivers design solutions across all project lifecycle stages and disciplines, driving improved connectivity, enhancing passenger journeys, and shaping the future of rail safety and efficiency.

These projects provide opportunities for personal and professional development, whether on long-term high-value programmes or smaller, community-focused initiatives. With these frameworks in place, you will influence infrastructure projects that shape the region’s future.

What You Will Be Doing

Our Signalling Engineers play an important part within the Consulting Rail Signalling team which deliver innovative and complex signalling designs to our clients including Network Rail, Transport for Wales and others. As an Assistant Signalling Engineer you will provide effective support and assistance to your design team on a variety of rail design schemes whilst playing a key role on projects.

Responsibilities

Include
  • Contributing to the signalling design elements of complete projects including renewal and or enhancement of control systems, interlockings, track circuits, communication systems and level crossings.
  • Being a key player in a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions
  • Preparation designs, calculations, drawings, risk assessments and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the criteria of quality, cost and programme.
  • Liaising with design engineers from interfacing disciplines.
  • Configuring and programming programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
  • Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions
  • Supporting the Design Lead in liaising with clients (both internal and external to Amey) and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries
  • Drive effective health and safety practices within the team
We Want To Hear From You If You Have
  • Demonstrable competence in producing rail signalling designs to assistant engineer level independently.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an Engineering, Mathematics or Science based subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning.
  • An Institution of Railway Signalling Engineers Assistant Design Licence (or higher) and an up-to-date logbook of work experience and training history.
  • Completed or partly completed the Institution of Railway Signalling Engineers Professional Examination.
  • An action plan leading to completion of either the professional review or end point assessment, resulting in the award of Incorporated or Chartered status.
  • Familiarity with Network Rail, RSSB and relevant BSEN standards.
  • Experience of programming programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to IEC 61131.
  • Experience in undertaking project related tasks associated with health, safety and welfare, e.g. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
