Position: Civil & Structural Resident Engineer (Energy)

Overview

As a Civil & Structural Resident Engineer, you will support the Energy Civil & Structural team through site visits and inspections, primarily within HV substations, to assess infrastructure and ensure compliance with safety and design standards. You will produce detailed reports, develop risk assessments and method statements, collaborate with designers and assessors, and engage with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
  • Site visits and site inspections on behalf of the Energy Civil & Structural team.
  • Visual inspection of civil and structural infrastructure – primarily in HV substations.
  • Prepare risk assessments and method statements, liaising with other disciplines and site owners.
  • Accompany others during site visits, especially those less familiar with the site.
  • Prepare detailed site visit reports, including photography, descriptions, sketches, Word documents and Excel reports.
  • Provide input to designers and DH15 assessors through reporting and attending design review meetings.
  • Engage in discussions with clients, contractors, and other disciplines (e.g., HV plant designers).
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil and/or Structural engineering.
  • Experience in electricity infrastructure, ideally NG substations.
  • Familiarity with construction sites, ideally with design experience.
  • CSCS/EUSR (or equivalent) certification.
  • NG Persons (previously National Grid BESC) registration.
  • Experience with DH15 reports.
  • Experience with on-site destructive and non‑destructive testing.
  • Willingness to travel to sites, including overnight stays if required.

Experience with in the energy transmission and distribution sector, major infrastructure, or industrial projects is highly desirable. Exposure to substation design, regulated environments, or projects requiring independent verification and certification would be particularly advantageous.
