Company Overview
Novomorphic is a new semiconductor design venture backed by Cadence Design Systems, Welsh Government, and CSA Catapult. We have been established to build critical semiconductor design capability in the UK.
Our focus is advanced integrated circuit and electronic system design, with particular strength in low-power intelligent hardware, edge AI, digital design, analogue and mixed-signal systems, and compound semiconductor technologies.
We are building Novomorphic from the ground up. That means every engineer who joins us will help shape the company, its technical capability, and its culture. We value technical excellence, ownership, curiosity, collaboration, and practical delivery.
The OpportunityNovomorphic is looking for a Senior Power Electronics Engineer to help design, model, simulate, and deliver advanced power conversion systems for semiconductor and electronic system applications.
This role suits an engineer with strong practical understanding of power stages, magnetics, control loops, compensation, and system-level behaviour.
Experience in analogue IC design would be a strong advantage, particularly where it supports power management, control, sensing, mixed-signal interfaces, or compact high-performance electronic systems.
Role OverviewYou will work on power electronics architectures from early concept through simulation, prototype validation, and design refinement. You will help define power stages, select components and magnetics approaches, build accurate models, and design analogue and digital control architectures that meet performance, efficiency, stability, and reliability targets.
The role combines hands-on engineering with technical ownership. You will work with IC designers, embedded engineers, systems engineers, and external partners to ensure designs are robust and aligned with product and customer needs.
What You Will Do- Power Electronics Design:
Design and develop power conversion circuits and systems from concept through validation. - Define power stage architectures, component choices, switching strategies, protection features, and performance trade-offs.
- Analyse losses, efficiency, thermal behaviour, stability, transient response, noise, and reliability.
- Magnetics and Power Components:
Design, specify, model, and evaluate magnetics, including inductors, transformers, coupled inductors, and related magnetic structures. - Understand core material behaviour, saturation, losses, parasitics, thermal limits, winding approaches, and manufacturability.
- Work with suppliers and partners to evaluate custom and off-the-shelf magnetic components.
- Control, Compensation, and Architecture:
Develop analogue and digital control architectures for power conversion systems. - Design, analyse, and tune compensators for stable and responsive closed-loop performance.
- Use frequency-domain and time-domain methods to assess stability, bandwidth, transient response, and control robustness.
- Modelling, Simulation, and Validation:
Build models for power stages, control loops, magnetics, parasitics, and system-level behaviour. - Run simulations to guide architecture choices, component selection, compensation design, thermal performance, and design margins.
- Support bring-up, lab testing, debug, characterisation, and design validation.
- Document assumptions, results, design choices, risks, and verification evidence clearly.
- Technical Leadership:
Take ownership of technical work packages and guide designs through review, implementation, and validation. - Work across disciplines with analogue IC, mixed-signal IC, digital, embedded, systems, and test engineers.
- Review designs, raise risks early, and help establish practical power electronics design methods within Novomorphic.
- Power electronics architectures for semiconductor and electronic system projects.
- Models and simulations for power stages, magnetics, controls, and system behaviour.
- Analogue and digital control loops, compensation approaches, and validation methods.
- Design documentation, review material, test plans, and characterisation reports.
- Reusable power electronics design practices for Novomorphic projects.
We are looking for an experienced engineer who can combine strong power electronics fundamentals with practical delivery. You should be comfortable working from incomplete early-stage requirements, making sensible assumptions, validating them, and refining the design as evidence improves.
Essential Requirements- Degree in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, power electronics, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
- Strong experience in power electronics design, modelling, simulation, and validation.
- Solid understanding of switching converters, power stages, feedback control, loop stability, compensation, losses, thermal behaviour, and protection methods.
- Experience designing or specifying magnetics for power electronics applications.
- Ability to design, analyse, and tune analogue or digital control…
