Mechanical Engineer

Overview

Lutron-Orluna has an immediate opening for a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer based in our Dunstable office. In this role, you will contribute to the development of innovative, high-quality lighting products that strengthen Lutron’s position as a global leader in lighting solutions.

You will join a collaborative, design-focused engineering team working across the full product development lifecycle. This includes exploring new technologies, materials, design techniques and manufacturing processes, from initial concept development through to production support and continuous product improvement.

The position will expand our engineering capacity, enabling the team to deliver projects more efficiently while maintaining Lutron’s high standards for quality, performance and design. It also provides an opportunity to develop technical expertise, gain experience across a broad range of engineering disciplines and work closely with experienced engineers and colleagues across the wider Lutron organisation.

We are looking for a curious, self-motivated engineer who enjoys solving problems and developing practical, robust solutions. You will use your technical expertise, creativity and communication skills to work collaboratively with Engineering, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Quality, Customer Services, Sales and external suppliers across multiple locations.

• Design mechanical components, assemblies, tools and fixtures for performance, reliability and manufacturability.
• Create and maintain 3D CAD models, drawings and engineering documentation for new products and design changes.
• Apply sound mechanical engineering principles to develop robust and cost-effective product solutions.
• Support the investigation, troubleshooting and resolution of technical issues across existing and new product ranges.
• Build and test prototypes to evaluate designs and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Apply Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) principles throughout the development process.
• Support material selection, manufacturing process selection and tolerance definition.
• Ensure designs meet applicable standards, compliance requirements and regulatory guidelines.
• Work closely with suppliers and manufacturing partners to develop and refine production-ready solutions.
• Support continuous improvement of existing products, manufacturing processes and engineering methods.

Skills & Experience Required

• Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 2:1 classification.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as Solid Works or Creo.
• Good understanding of mechanical design principles and Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA).
• Understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, tolerancing and component selection.
• Knowledge of thermal management and its application to product design.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a practical approach to engineering challenges.
• Effective communication and collaborative working abilities.
• A proactive approach to learning, problem solving and continuous improvement.

• Experience with LED lighting, electronics or related products.
• Experience designing products for high-volume or precision manufacturing.
• Familiarity with regulatory and compliance requirements such as CE and UL.
• Experience with mechanical testing, prototyping and product validation.
• Familiarity with engineering standards and technical documentation.
• Experience working with suppliers and manufacturing partners.
• Experience in a fast-paced New Product Development (NPD) environment.
• Exposure to structured NPD or project management processes.
• Experience with project management or engineering change management tools.
