Role SummaryWe are seeking a Junior Manager / VAT Consultant to join our expanding team. This role is ideal for a VAT professional who values meaningful client relationships, prioritises client engagement, and has strong technical grounding in education, public and not‑for‑profit sectors.
You will manage a portfolio of valued clients, maintain trusted relationships, and deliver proactive VAT advice. You will also contribute to business development, mentor junior colleagues, and help grow the firm’s VAT profile in the education, FE and HE sector.
Key Responsibilities- Act as the key point of contact for clients across education, local government, charity, and housing sectors.
- Deliver comprehensive VAT reviews and advisory services, including complex areas such as partial exemption, non‑business apportionment, VAT return reviews, property transactions, and VAT treatment of grant funding.
- Support clients through HMRC interactions, including voluntary disclosures, PESM applications, and inspections.
- Oversee and review VAT returns, annual adjustments, and Capital Goods Scheme calculations.
- Manage helpline services and respond to client queries promptly.
- Keep clients updated on technical developments and sector‑wide issues.
- Identify new advisory opportunities and support the VAT team’s growth.
- Contribute to thought‑leadership pieces, client seminars, and training sessions.
- Collaborate across tax, audit, and corporate finance teams.
- Embed best practices in VAT compliance and advisory processes.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of VAT legislation and HMRC policy.
- Assure work meets firm quality, risk management, and professional standards.
- 3–5 years of VAT experience, ideally in professional services, consultancy, or in‑house advisory.
- Strong experience with education, public sector, or not‑for‑profit clients.
- In‑depth knowledge of partial exemption, non‑business apportionment, and VAT recovery methods.
- HMRC experience or CTA, ATT, or equivalent qualification (or working towards one).
- Experience liaising with HMRC on technical matters.
- Experience preparing client training or delivering workshops.
- Exposure to VAT issues in property, construction, or healthcare.
- Strong organisational, communication, and time‑management skills.
- Commercially minded with clear perception of client requirements.
