An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and self‑motivated Band 5 Aseptic Pharmacy/Science Manufacturing Technician working in both aseptic services and clinical trials.

Looking for an individual with aseptic experience who is passionate about improving patient/carer experience to join our Aseptic Services team at St Mary’s Pharmaceutical Unit (SMPU).

The aseptic services team based at SMPU provides chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition preparative services under section 10 for patients based at University Hospital of Wales (UHW). The service includes providing clinical trials under Section 37, both commercial and non‑commercial trials requiring aseptic manipulation of patient doses.

You will work as part of a specialised, friendly team as a cleanroom supervisor with qualifications as an Accredited Checking Technician (ACT) or Pre & In Process Checker (PIPC) providing this service based at SMPU, an off‑site manufacturing and aseptic unit.

Previous aseptic / clinical trials experience is essential for this role.

Main duties of the job
  • Receive chemotherapy and PN prescriptions and perform pre and in‑process checks for worksheets and labels.
  • Prepare chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition and clinical trials including ATIMPs using aseptic technique.
  • Conduct pre and in‑process checks in PN and chemotherapy preparation.
  • Train and supervise new staff.
  • Maintain excellent attention to detail and quality standards.
  • Communicate effectively both written and verbally.
  • Follow complex operating procedures and meet deadlines.
  • Work under pressure and maintain quality standards.
  • Collaborate within a team, demonstrating initiative when required.
  • Support learning of new systems and technologies.
  • Plan and prioritise work efficiently.
  • Welsh language knowledge is desirable;
    Welsh and/or English speakers are welcomed.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The candidate will work under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidance and be actively involved in aseptic preparation of chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition and clinical trials.

  • Work with isolators and laminar airflow cabinets, utilising specialist equipment such as EM2400 Compo under for parenteral nutrition.
  • Apply Good Clinical Practice (GCP) principles and maintain records of dispensing, including clinical trial material.
  • Assist in internal ordering, stock control and distribution of aseptic and clinical trial products.
  • Supervise pharmacy assistants, pre‑registration pharmacy technicians, pre‑registration and diploma pharmacists, and pharmacy students.
  • Induct and supervise new pharmacy staff.
  • Participate in staff performance and appraisal schemes and in training sessions.
  • Work rotas, including early, late, weekend and bank holiday shifts.
  • Participate in departmental audits and service improvement initiatives.
  • Prioritise own workload and that of junior colleagues.
  • Carry out routine tasks within the work area.
  • Respond to changes in workflow priorities as the day develops.
  • Dispense complex medications with accuracy and speed.
  • Adhere to standard operating procedures.
  • Actively participate in continual improvement of the pharmacy service.
