Job Summary

We are offering an exciting opportunity for a Dosimetrist Healthcare Scientist to join our forward‑thinking radiotherapy physics department at the Velindre Cancer Service in Cardiff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertaking measurements on Linear Accelerators and on patients
  • Maintaining dosimeters and providing brachytherapy support
  • Providing treatment planning support
  • Supporting medical physics activities across the department, including QA, calibration, repair & maintenance of equipment and individual patient dose calculations

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable;

Main Duties

The post holder will undertake post‑graduate development to enable registration on the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) or equivalent, with support across all relevant syllabus areas. Flexible hours are required, and work may be needed in associated hospitals in the locality.

Essential Qualifications and Experience
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and to work at another base in the region if required by the service
  • Undergraduate degree in physics, clinical technology, computer science, radiography science, computing or equivalent qualification
  • Competence in mathematics, particularly mental arithmetic
  • Accuracy and attention to detail, with basic IT and spreadsheet skills
  • Proven communication skills, both verbal and written, especially when communicating with professionals who may not share a technical background
  • Ability to visualise 3D models conceptually and on a computer screen
  • Theoretical knowledge of the physics behind radiotherapy treatment
  • Good knowledge of routine radiotherapy treatment methods, including the use of the Linac
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • Experience of clinical use of the mould room, CT simulator, brachytherapy, Linacs, etc.
  • Previous training relevant to the dosimetrist role
  • Knowledge of the requirements of other disciplines (e.g., oncology, radio biology, mould room, simulator)
  • Understanding of anatomy and physiology, especially cross‑sectional imaging

Support will be provided across all relevant aspects of the syllabus to enable registration on the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) or equivalent if required.
