In this role, you’ll assess customer applications to evaluate medical and financial risk, helping us make informed underwriting decisions across Life Insurance, Critical Illness Cover, and Income Protection. What you’ll be doing
  • Assessing and documenting life and disability risk by reviewing customer applications and determining appropriate underwriting terms, in line with your agreed level of autonomy
  • Making underwriting decisions across Life, Critical Illness, and Income Protection, balancing risk, customer outcomes, and commercial considerations
  • Participating in or leading process improvement and change initiatives to enhance underwriting quality, systems, efficiency, and commercial viability
  • Requesting additional medical or financial information where appropriate, ensuring requests are proportionate and do not negatively impact the customer journey
  • Identifying potential complaints and ensuring they are escalated and addressed promptly, with root causes captured to support continuous improvement and regulatory compliance
  • Maintaining accurate, timely records of all underwriting activity to support reporting, communication, and effective business decision‑making
  • Keeping up to date with legislative and regulatory requirements, ensuring all underwriting decisions remain compliant
  • Communicating professionally and effectively with internal stakeholders, external customers, and third parties using a variety of channels
  • Understanding service level commitments made during the sales process and ensuring underwriting activity supports customer expectations and delivery standards
Who we’re looking for
  • Proven experience underwriting UK protection products
  • UK medical underwriting experience (essential)
  • Strong understanding of mortality and morbidity risk factors, including financial underwriting
  • Extensive knowledge of Life, Critical Illness, and Income Protection products
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of relevant UK legislation and regulatory requirements
  • Experience contributing to or leading underwriting improvement initiatives
