Overview

Military Claims Solicitor (NQ - 6 PQE)
Cardiff

An established Cardiff-based military claims practice is looking to expand, with multiple solicitor hires planned at junior to mid-level. The team represents current and former service personnel in claims brought against the Ministry of Defence, working on matters that combine serious injury work with complex liability and medical issues.

This is a strong opportunity for a solicitor looking to move into a defined specialist area and build long-term expertise in military claims.

The department

The military team is large and well resourced, with around 40-50 people across the group, from paralegals through to partner level. The work includes serious physical injury and military deafness claims, with experienced supervision and established processes in place.

The team is extremely busy at present, and the roles are being created to support growing caseloads rather than replace leavers.

The work

You will run your own caseload from an early stage, managing claims against the MOD from initial instruction through to settlement. Caseloads are active and varied, typically involving around 100 files at different stages. The role involves hands-on claimant litigation, including:

  • Taking initial instructions and drafting detailed witness statements
  • Managing significant volumes of disclosure
  • Regular client contact and advice
  • Preparing pleadings, court documents and schedules of loss
  • Instructing counsel and liaising with experts
  • Reviewing complex medical and acoustic evidence
  • Advising on breach of duty and quantum

More experienced solicitors will also support the supervision and development of paralegals within the team.

About you
  • NQ to 3 PQE is typical, though candidates up to 6 PQE will be considered
  • Military claims experience is preferred but not essential
  • The team is open to solicitors from personal injury, clinical negligence or catastrophic injury backgrounds
  • You are looking to specialise rather than remain a generalist
  • Comfortable managing your own caseload with limited supervision
  • Strong client care, organisation and attention to detail
Working environment
  • Hybrid working model
  • 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays
  • Birthday day off and CSR days
  • Pension, life assurance and professional fees covered
Why this role

For solicitors currently working in PI, clinical negligence or catastrophic injury, this offers a clear route into a specialist military practice with scale, structure and depth. The work is demanding, but the training, supervision and long-term career prospects are strong.
